I've only heard murmers of it so far. One of my buddies said it was "good," but then again, I live in Neo-Conservative Wyoming, so I doubt that's totally acurate. I'll probably end up watching it at some point. But wow, that article about American Sniper that Shen linked was just... wow.

If we're talking about why people care more about the people at Charlie Hebdo than the decimated Nigerian villages, then we should keep in account that empathy is inversely related to distance. For examlple, if a friend of yours died, you would care more about it than when a news flash tells you that 5 people died on another continent.
You can't blame people for not caring as much, people would explode if they did.
It is understandable for people of the western world to be very concerned about Charlie Hebdo, since it happened in a country like theirs (kinda), and it infringes on a value most of them (or us, whatever) hold high, namely free speech.
That doesn't take away that things are right or wrong.

Gun ownership in the United States is controversial, but lets reveal some things that may surprise you.

Check out this video. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=806713486044197&pnref=story

I think those rates have more to do with motive than gun control. Detroit is literally broke, and the unemployment rate there is quite high (correct me if I'm wrong). It's a rather poor place, which causes crime rates to be high there, including murder.

The trends of unemployment and wealth imparity/disparity are the main factors that causes these high murder-rates. And it's the same for all those high murder-rate countries, they all have a huge wealth-disparity problem, or are very poor in general. Gun control takes away a means to an end, it doesn't take away the mean.

And those low-rate countries (primarily European) have gun-control laws, which the narrator quietly glosses over.

Also, more diverse places tend to have higher murder rates, since it creates tensions between different ethnicities (could that be of an unspoken racial bias/xenophobia? Noo...). Texan cities tend to be quite homogenous, while Chicago is pretty diverse.

Gun control isn't the deciding trend in homicide, inequality is.

EDIT: I know that there are a bunch of other factors that also take part in this, reality is complex (so if someone comes with a simple solution or claims that a solution is simple, you should be wary...but I digress), but I believe that I coverd the most important things. Violence comes out of conflict, and inequality is a main source. I also never claimed that solving inequality in a healthy way is an easy thing to do.

I don't got much to say, but I can only see America slipping into a Socialist nation, seeing as the entire country as a whole is flat broke and has to borrow from others. National issues should be settled first, such as the national debt.

In all honesty, many aspects of Socialism are a very good thing. Just like some aspects of Capitalism are a good thing, but over all one entirely isn't stable enough on its own. I feel a hybrid of Socialism and Capitalism would be a nice solution to many of the problems going on.

My stance is, certain things should be a human right as opposed to a privilege, and Capitalism hinders many of these things from actually being rights. Many people in this country have some giant problem with Socialism, despite the fact that many Socialistic policies could fix a lot of problems inside of the US.

But, that's just my opinion. I don't want to get too far in depth or I'll wind up starting or getting in to an argument, something I really don't want. So, I'll end it with; things such as health care and the ability to live without choosing between clothing, a home, and food should be basic rights and not privileges.

The current form of capitalism, in my opinion, is lacking. It generates an immense wealth inequality, which leads to tensions among the poor (mainly in comparison with the richer class), and between the poor and the rich.
It's true that some social policies would fix a lot of problems, but by applying them it can increase the cost of labor (since that's what will be taxed before capital, since people will move their capital to countries where those don't get taxed, or as much), which makes a country less competitive in terms of economy. They should happen, though, but wisely.

The only way to successfully apply big social changes is by international collective effort, but (pretty much) no country wants to give in that much of their autonomy, nor can you get such a consensus on governing between a large amount of (economically powerful) countries, especially with money having such an (sometimes corrupting) impact on democracies (for example America's role in the Palestinian/Israelian conflict. But that's a huge can of worms that is probably not that easy to open without too much of a fuzz...).
And then you have to go into the problems with mass consumption, which is more relevant than money itself in the video Jericho posted 3 posts ago...
It's a complex mess all over the place, and solving it will probably the biggest challenge of this century, since it affects so much other issues (like global warming) that are relevant to us in the not-so long run.

I read this article today.

And, it really; really pissed me off.

How can so many people still call the US the greatest country in the world? When, we are lagging behind so far in terms of human rights and various other important aspects of every day life such as healthcare?

I don't get it. This country seems to be so run on greed, and it makes me sick to my stomach.

Can I please have a reset and spawn in another world? D:

If you can afford it, sure. :P

On topic: "vote in blank" being the biggest joke ever in my country, in which if it wins an election only the most voted candidates can participate in the second round (eliminating all the smaller ones) and if the "vote in blank" also wins the second round then is invalid.

The article is 2 years old by now, the situation might have improved (even thogh I don't have a clue if it actually did).

The thing is, it is economically justifiable for insurance companies or companies who own hospitals or medicine to charge that much, if people need it anyway. The American health care system is a divided, cluttered expensive mess. Irony is, people who would be helped by policies directly affecting this, protest those for being too 'socialist' or 'communist' (read: they get kind of brainwashed due to a political system that really messes things up, and I'm not even starting about corrupcy). According to that logic, I greet my fellow comrades in Europe.

And the sad thing is that the politics related to the fuzz about Ukraine will divert attention from glaring social problems like this. (I'm not degrading the conflict out there, I could very well lead to a new Cold War...Big powers and their priorities...)

Can I please have a reset and spawn in another world? D:

Sorry, this is hardcore mode, special edition. At least, if you believe in such things (the trees don't break when I puch them, so...yeah. I tried.).
