Love at First Lie: A Chronicles Sidestory

Love is an abstract feeling, one that stretches beyond logic and reason. People define love differently according to their experiences and perspectives. Some believe that love is merely an illusion; others say that it is the act of caring for another person. On the other hand, others believe that one can love several without discrimination while others say that being faithful is required for love to exist.

Welcome to the Reborn Mafia Club's Valentine's Special - entitled Love at First Lie: A Chronicles Sidestory! I am Mafioso Divergent, your Game Host. In this game, we will be exploring the different types of love as the characters struggle to find the love that will forever last. Read on to find out what this game entails and feel free to ask me any questions you may have!

I. WHAT IS MAFIA AND HOW IS IT PLAYED? [AN OVERVIEW]

Mafia is a social deduction game which requires analyzing, cooperation, and looking through lies. There are two main factions in a mafia game: the Uninformed Majority [Town], who have to find others of their kind while hunting for the mafia, and the Informed Minority [Mafia], who have a private chat and plan there on how they should trick the town and whom they should kill. There may also be Third Party or Independent roles, which have different agendas and win conditions.

At the beginning of the game, players receive a PM or a DM (in some cases) with their role and alignment.

There are two major phases in a Mafia game:

(1) The Day Phase  Typically lasting 48 hours, players use this opportunity to discuss about several things, which may include the outcome of the previous phases, behavior of players, and flow of the game; the ultimate goal in the day phase is for the Town players to find the Mafia slowly while Mafia players have to blend in carefully. Before the day ends, players must vote for a player whom they want to be eliminated on grounds of suspicion and the player receiving the most votes will be eliminated.

(2) The Night Phase  Typically lasting 24 hours, the thread is considered locked at this point and players may not comment at all. Instead, players with night actions, special abilities related to their role, may use these to aid their faction. The Mafia also discusses in the private chat on whom to dispose of.

The game continues until one of the major factions attains their win condition or unless it is no longer possible.

What makes this different from a normal game of Mafia?

(1) The game is a closed set-up. Roles to be used are unspecified and some roles used may or may not be modifications of existing roles.

(2) The characters of the game serve as clues to possible roles. Players will be inclined to speculate on the role a specific character has.

(3) There is an added mechanic in relation to the theme. (More detailed below)

(4) Role and alignment will be revealed upon a player's death, along with the Role PM.

(5) This game is set a few years before the events of Chronicles of the Onyx Arcade Mafia; however, this is a sidestory and previous game knowledge is not required to enjoy the game.

II. OPENING NARRATIVE

[The narrative is a work of fiction - none of the characters, events, or other inputs are in any way canon to the plot of Pokemon Reborn]

In the years before the Keepers of the Onyx Arcade was created, its members divided, and the war between the Keepers, Team Valiant, and Lumina Association happened, the future members of the aforementioned organizations were still students in the great Azurine University, which had been created some months after the renovation.

Azurine University was a school open to all sorts of people - from eccentrics to prodigies to athletes to hopeless romantics. It was one of the most renowned in the region, second only to the ancient Onyx Academy. It is said that 27% of university students aim for Azurine University.

Aside from knowledge and integrity, love is one of the great pillars of the university. It's not uncommon to see couples holding or embracing each other out in the public. On the other hand, there are a lot of students who subscribe to good friendly relations only while others bear unrequited love, yet to be recriprocated.

Valentine's Day is a widely recognized and appreciated day in the university. On this day, love is best expressed between students in forms of friendship and romantic chocolates. University polls claim that 71% of couples are created and 53% of friendships are strengthened during Valentine's Day.

As the days before Valentines' Day comes, unsettling rumors revolve around an unknown Heartbreakers' Club - a secret club said to have been formed solely to ruin the day and ultimately, change the perception on love. Though its members are limited and each have different motivations to joining the club, they share this common goal.

Despite this, several youth have identified themselves as a member of the Red Roses Society - a team aiming to make the celebration of Valentine's Day successful and memorable for everyone.

On the other hand, some students have goals unaligned with either group. Each seem to be organizing their own plans.

Will Valentine's Day in Azurine University be a success or a failure? Play and find out!

III. FACTIONS

Red Roses Society - A team organizing the success of the Valentine's Day celebration, they are the the Uninformed Majority or the Town. They wish to prevent any interferences to the celebration. They win when they stop all the threats to the town.

Heartbreakers' Club - An underground club formed to break Valentine's Day and discard the appreciation of love on this day, they are the Informed Minority or the Mafia. They want to break the hearts of the Red Roses Society. They win when they eliminate all town players or when it is impossible for town to resist.

Third Party - They are students who have different plans for the upcoming Valentine's Day. They have individual win conditions.

IV. ROLES AND CHARACTERS

As stated previously in the first section, the roles will not be revealed explicitly due to the closed nature of the game. On the other hand, the characters of the story will be presented and from here, players may speculate on potential roles existing and assigning them to specific characters.

The Freshmen
1. Newt: A freshman who moved to Azurine University in the middle of the first semester, Newt gathered popularity relatively easily for his positivity and warm enthusiasm, though he often is made fun of, but students do it because they love him. He treats everyone equally and says that romantic love is merely an illusion, despite being very much affectionate.

2. Venus: One of the bold freshmen, Venus has been known for being a trouble student, yet people respect his assertiveness and initiative, though some perceive it as recklessness. Some others love him for his killer smile. Behind his playful personality, he believes in the spirit of love and one day hopes to achieve it. He's the Brains of the Dangerous Trio.

3. Sosobean: When you think of Newt, you commonly associate him with Sosobean; at a glance, one can easily see their close friendship with each other from the similar values they share. He's the Vice President of the Media Club; he's often concerned with the Anime section of the Student Publication.

4. Mafioso Divergent: Divergent is a quiet and introverted student, despite the relatively extroverted student body surrounding him. He's often more engaged with his studies than focusing on love, though he does believe that love is the most beautiful emotion and it is worth living a lifetime with someone you love. He's the current First Seat of his year.

5. Seal: Seal is one of the youngest in the university, but several have expressed interest in his love for seals and Pokemon. He's working on his own fangame, a dedicated and hardworking student who aims to succeed in this regard. He thinks that love is all about appreciating or being happy for someone or something.

The Sophomores
6. Quinn: Quinn is relatively famous among the males in the university; however, she is a serious lover, one who is willing to believe in it despite the many challenges it poses. She is a strong, independent woman, and other students come to her for advice. This stems from the experiences she's had. She's the Charm of the Dangerous Trio.

7. Greninja: Greninja is perceived to be an introvert like some other students, but when he speaks, it's always something meaningful and truthful. He thinks that love is not about changing someone to be your ideal, but accepting them for who they are and love is all about learning from mistakes.

8. Castiel: According to a statement by Mafioso Divergent, Castiel is a mix of easygoing and serious, and a mix of complex and simple. He seems to have a good bond with Newt as they seem to possess similar characteristics. 

9. Paul25: Paul25 is a trustworthy individual, one whom students count on to be a caring and loyal person. He's positive and hardworking, trying to extend effort in anything he does. He's someone who believes that love is a feeling of great affection towards someone; in his point, familial love is the best kind of love because it is one where you are more likely going to find what you need and you're less likely to be betrayed.

10. DigitalAmber: Digital Amber is the Vice President of the Arts Club. He's an artistic individual and he comes up with original, yet interesting ideas. He's vibrant and colorful; there seems to be word that he's involved with another club, one that's unwarranted by the school. He thinks that love is about being selfish, yet selfless at the same time, while the most important ingredient is trust.

11. Hooligan: Hooligan is the Treasurer of the Student Government, a man who has the potential to lead due to his experience in the Breeding Community in Obsidia. He's a straightforward and open person, someone who doesn't hesitate to share his opinion. His personality makes it easier for students to understand him, though at times, he is misinterpreted.

12. YinYang: YinYang is not the talkative type, but when you get to know him more, you're likely to see the humorous side of him and be able to know him better, especially when you have similar interests. He's friendly and not so hard to get along with.

13. LykosHand: LykosHand is one of the kindest and most approachable people of the university, always the person you can count on to help you. He's optimistic and cheerful, and this is a quality people like him for which is why he was nominated for Press Relations Officer of the Student Government. Students often say he's the perfect gentleman. Several have confessed to him, but he prefers to find 'The One'.
 
14. Alisae: Alisae is renowned for being a Student Detective in the university, having been involved in several cases such as finding criminals or wolves, in different terms. Although Alisae is a veteran of solving such cases, it seems that love is not within their sights, but they think that it's about a desire to spend time with a person.

The Juniors
15. Eviora: As the President of the Theatre Club, Eviora is dedicated to her craft and can place on a different face and personality in every play she's acting in. Students are in awe of her acting skills while they also love the genuine happy expression she shows on her face when she is together with Alistair.

16. Amine: Amine is one of the outgoing juniors in the university; he is often seen having a good conversation with a group of friends while at other points, students witness him flirting during recess and lunch. He believes that love should not be limited; instead, it should be open to any and all ideas. He used to be the Vice President of the Shipping Club.

17. Sailboat: Sailboat apparently used to be the President of the Shipping Club when he was still a freshman two years ago, but the club disbanded due to a lack of members. He's quite good at seeing the connections of people, so he's someone who can relate easily. His stand on love is that it is something worth having.

18. Corso: Corso is the leading proponent of the Media Club. Despite being a Junior, he holds great power in the school as the President of the Media Club. His information network is marvelous and he has superb skill on gathering data on students. He seems to have no intention to pursue love... or does he?

19. NickCrash: NickCrash is a serious person, one who is in touch with the issues and problems around the university. The President of the Social Studies Club, he believes that love is an altruistic bond between two people in which one sacrifices maximum gain for the other.

20. Bazaro: Bazaro is the President of the Arts Club. He's one of the most artistic in the university, famous for his expertise in spriting. He's a positive person and he usually thinks on the bright side of things. He's not one to give up easily, always determined to achieve a goal by his own ways and means.

21. Purplecicada: Purplecicada is the Vice President of the Theatre Club and said to be on equal par with Eviora in terms of acting. She's personally seen often playing evil roles, though she also apparently likes good roles. She's a faithful lover, one who accepts the good and the bad of the people she love.

22. Alphagar: Alphagar is a silent, yet sweet student - she writes short responses, but each response is sincere and heartfelt; for this reason, she's relatively famous among the other students. She's one of the known gamers in the university. On the topic of love, she's someone who thinks it is relational.

The Seniors
23. Alistair: Involved in the endeavors of the school as the Vice President of the Student Government, Alistair-senpai is one of the pioneers in pushing for the success of many projects. When asked about love, he simply smiles widely and proudly reveals his relationship with Eviora, the Theatre Club President.

24. Roswell: Roswell is an intelligent and analytic person, one whom you can believe to come up with good strategies to succeed in something. He's the President of the Investigations Club, one that is well-versed in investigating student-related issues and sometimes collaborates with Alisaes group. He thinks that love is giving up something without expecting anything in return; he doesn't have anyone he prefers though because it would make his judgment biased.

25. Jace Stormkirk: Jace Stormkirk is the President of the Poetry Club, though it has a limited number of members. He sings poems of sorrow and of happiness, of love and of hatred. Obviously, he's a romantic, someone who perceives love as patient, kind, and understanding - a true poet and bard.

26. Megagun: The strong glare in Megagun's eyes often turn people away from him. Some say he always looks like someone who belongs to the mafia. However, getting to know him more helps one realize his good points. He seems to be more interested in action and adventure than love though. He's the Brawn of the Dangerous Trio.

27. EndearingCharacterTrait: EndearingCharacterTrait is, as the name implies, someone who cares. He has a good sense of humor and he's someone whom you can relate with on different kinds of topics. He has a rational belief on love: that it is a balance of joy and suffering - one side cannot exist without the other and that makes love beautiful or tragic. Friendly love is the best for him.

28. Lord Drakyle: Lord Drakyle is an unpredictable person. At times, he's serious and analytic while at other times, he's playful and sarcastic. In any case, he's a senpai who's fun to talk to, in any personality he shows someone. On the topic of love, he always says that it's a relationship built on trust and this applies to all types of love in his opinion.

29. Anti_Hero: Anti_Hero is the Secretary of the Student Government, a charismatic and welcoming student who tries his best to achieve the objectives of the school. He possesses unique ideas and is willing to share them. He believes that love is about prioritizing your partner above all else, and supporting them in any way possible.

30. Candy: Candy belongs to a number of student affiliations: she's a member of the Arts Club, the Literature Club, and she also helps out in the Advice Committee. She's a diligent and dedicated person, someone who can produce quality output. There seems to be a shadow in her heart when it comes to love, but she seems to be patient in waiting for the right time for love.

 

V. CHOCOLATE GALORE [ADDED MECHANIC]

Every Day Phase, students may give another student a chocolate publicly in the thread. There are two types of chocolate (only one of Friendship Chocolate OR Sweetheart Chocolate may be given per day):

(1) Friendship Chocolate - A chocolate given to mark friendship or a respect for someone. To give Friendship Chocolate, one must use the format, Give Friendship Chocolate: Player Name.

(1) Sweetheart Chocolate - A chocolate given to mark deep affection or love for someone. To give Sweetheart Chocolate, one must use the format, Give Sweetheart Chocolate: Player Name.

Chocolates may or may not have effects accompanying them. This may depend on a number of factors such as compatibility, timing, and relational notions.

 

During the end of the Day, a tally of whomever received chocolate will be placed. On the night, players will be asked if they accept or decline the chocolate. Declining the chocolate means that the effects will not occur. Accepting the chocolate means that the effects will take affect on the day roght after it is received.

VI. RULES

  Reveal hidden contents

(1) The Reborn Forum rules apply here.

(2) All Player Discussion must be kept in the thread; mandated special private chats may also be utilized. Other forms of contact outside of these such as Private Chats without the Hosts permission, IRL contact, and other methods are not allowed.

(3) Day Phase lasts for 48 hours. Players must make at least 2 posts and vote per day phase. Failure to meet this requirement for two day phases (even non consecutive) will result in replacement or mod intervention.

(4) Voting is done in the format: [Eliminate] Player Name or in similar formats. Changing of votes may be done in this format: [Unvote] Player Name. All votes must be placed in bold or they are not counted. In the case of a tie in votes, a no lynch will ensue.

(5) Night Phase lasts for 24 hours. Players are not allowed to comment in the thread. Violation of this rule will result in warning (1st offence) and disqualification (2nd offence).

(6) Sharing of Role PMs  through screenshots, verbatim copying, or other forms  to other players is illegal. Consequences will be given to violators.

(7) If you are eliminated in any way, you may have a final post, that will not reflect critical game information such as night actions and the like.

(8) Actions  day or night  should be sent to me via PM (Forums) or DM (Discord).

(9) Editing of posts is discouraged. If you have minor corrections, you may do so, but if you wish to have additions, you must make a new post or quote your previous post if you wish to highlight the addition.
