Good starter choice! When in doubt always choose the cutest.

If you are having trouble with Julia first of all I recommend evolving Cyndaquil and getting Roselia. To get Budew you need to defeat the trainer in the little grassy patch at the north of the pokemon center and then talk to her again and she will give you a rose incense. Once you have the rose incense then you have to go to the stone door at the most northern area of Peridot ward on a clear day and there you'll notice a Budew walking on the wall to your right. Get near to the wall and the budew will simply jump to you and join your team. The hardest part is to evolve it, since it evolves via friendship, so you will have to walk around a lot to max its affection, but Roselia is one of the best pokemon available that early in the game.

If you're lucky and you have stormy weather then next to the power plant gym you might be able to find a blitzle, which has abilities

that make it immune to electric attacks and will help you against certain pokemon in Julia's team that I doubt Roselia would be able to deal with.

[Insert obvious Magnezone and Gardevoir comment here]

Jokes aside, while you can't really get ralts without trading with someone (like Zarc) that early anymore, the core of Magnezone and Gardevoir blows through many things in reborn (Ralts got relocated multiple times and I like to think it's because of that core)

Oh, yeah. If you want recommendations for the entire game in general then there are a couple of sidequests/chains of events that reward you with a chance of getting cool pokemon.

Once you have dealt with the problem in Obsidia ward go back to the daycare center (building to the right of the pokemon center) and talk to the elder couple untul something happens. After that what this sidequest is about will be clear enough. Once you have finished it talk to the girl in the only accesible building in Onyx ward for a chance of getting an egg of one in six different very cool water types.

There's also a chain of events in Jasper and Beryl wards that unlocks another egg for a -probably- very useful pokemon. I won't spoil this one but make sure to check every corner of these wards as you complete the story.

Just now, Zarc said:

It's objectively a good starter. Nature power lets it take advantage of a lot of fields and if it can't take advantage then it has access to moves that can change them. It does good against a lot of leaders.

I fail to defeat every leader several times before beating them, so I don't think I would be able. What I do is monotype runs, they add a bit of challenge and make you use pokemon and strategies that you would normally overlook.

Well, not exactly the same: there's a higher probability of a pokemon being shiny. I don't remember the exact numbers but shinys in reborn are significantly more common and the shiny sprites are also different from the official ones.
