It's been a while

After the end of E16 I ran around trying to breed some nice additions for my team, wondertrading a bit and catching some Pokemon I was still missing.

And then I kinda stopped, knowing that it would still take quite some time for E17 to arrive.

I've just come back to take a look at how things are going and - surprise - E17 is here (and has been for some time);

 

As I've kinda lost touch with the game and forgot a few things, I do have a question (as I've just found out the answer to the other one):

I've just been to Beryl Ward (I didn't know how to resume the story) in the former arena, and I've seen a certain someone.

Was this a part of E16 I missed or is it a part of E17?
If it's the latter, was it part of the main story or rather the start to an event?

If it's the former, then it will inevitably come up anyways and I don't need any more information on it. If it's the latter, could someone give me a hint where to go next? (Haven't resumed the story yet)

I'd appreciate it if you could keep it as spoiler-free as possible (apart from answering my questions)
