"Damn it, how did they get past the courtyard?"

 

"Those dogs are useless! Ugh... now we'll have to report this to the General."

 

"Well, since you brought it up, you can do it!"

 

"Wh-What?"

 

"Someone has to! And I, uh, need to help defend! Go on!" Without waiting for a rebuttal, the soldier runs off around the hall, leaving his compatriot standing and looking progressively more crestfallen before turning and gathering his wits to enter the throne hall.

 

He barely walks in before nearly being blown off his feet by the sound of screeching.

 

"Worthless, worthless, worthless!!!! All of you! What do you mean those imbecilic Knights have sent out more troops? You, bag of worms!" Milich spins around, jabbing a finger in the direction of the hapless new arrival. "You better have good news, wretch!"

 

"... The... The Allied Guard, sir, they're... they're advancing, sir."

 

"They're WHAT?" For a few seconds, Milich looks like he's going to explode, the same shade as his outrageous hat. But then he suddenly decompresses, exhaling slowly and fanning himself with a hand delicately. "No, no. Milich, you are gracious and kind. You will forgive these ingrates; they don't know any better. Ah, the burdens of the strong and intelligent..." He looks back at the messenger. "Well, you know what to do, don't you?" The soldier stares at him with anxious confusion. "... Don't you?"

 

More silence.

 

"... FIRE ANTOINETTE YOU HEAPING PILE OF REFUSE!!"

 

The man scurries off as fast as his legs can carry him, before Milich is even done screaming.

[Pyon Pyon Kyuu!~]

"O-oh... Uhm thank you! ... Hehe..." Naomi looked away from him, as her face turned red. Is this what it felt like to be called cute? Why was her hear beating so fast? This had never happened before, but now she wanted to not mess it up. She slapped both of her cheeks and ran forward past her allies, hands shining with bright magic. Now or never Naomi, if there was ever a time to have full control of your magic it's now. We've got to impress him. She thought to herself. And either by pure coincidence or by sheer force of will, her magic responded. The familiar sense of power, the rush of magic surging through her and out of her hands began. 

She willed the magic to become a hawk, thrice the size of Naomi. It flew forward at the cavalier, and grasped it with it's talons. Plucking the man and not the horse the hawk flew up closer to the ceiling and packed itself tight into a ball surrounding the cavalier. The ball flashed bright for a second, and exploded close to the ceiling leaving it and the surrounding walls singed. And no signs of the man or his armor.

A torrent of flame whips past Naomi as Michi strides forward, armor clanking with each movement. What they lacked in power by comparison, they would make up for functionality, or so Michi hoped.

Fallon grimaced as a bolt from the sky took the reckless boy to his knees. Ballistae? Here? he thought. He had seen them before of course; they were a common danger....back then. But he never expected one to be set up inside a castle like this....the bolts could get caught on things so easily. Making a mental note of that, and keeping his eye on the higher levels, he grabbed a vulnerary from someone nearby while muttering something about "borrowing this".

 

As he cleaned the wound, he heard a giggle and the nearest man exploded in an extravagant flash of light. Nodding in thanks to Naomi and standing back up he thought. She seems excited today. and then steadied his tome once again.

Ceridwen's mouth drew into a grimace as Argos was suddenly struck down not only by the cavaliers, who she'd figured wouldn't be an insurmountable problem, but by some sort of ballista -- that wasn't good news. And she didn't fancy her chances against those mages much, either; this wasn't the best position she'd ever been in. Still, she could help!
