His tone quickly turns into disgust as he continues, “I should’ve know you’d be still alive, you always have been a cockroach. Here I thought you were a casualty of that raid to spark a war with Ria, or maybe your debts finally caught up with you and they sent hit men to finish the job. Tell me, is mother still alive or is that too much to ask for?”

"Sh- I-I mean- F-Ficus...? P-Please be careful..." The meek Lucy had little will to do her usual dance after Siegmund's revelation as well as being somewhat intimidated by Shin's sudden determination to kill, but tried her best nonetheless to allow Shin a burst of motivation.

Siegmund simply continued to glare at Baldur, his expression unreadable as he listened.

 

"Your Perusian family is dead, boy. Father and mother. I don't know the life you led afterwards— but judging by how you lead a life of anger; shouting at your own teammates in the middle of a siege... I can tell you seek vengeance against those who wronged you. Perhaps I can give you the chance you've been looking for."

 

"So you don't give a damn about the hell you let Ruslan put me through, yet you glorify the death of Orchid's parents!? Do I not deserve vengeance as Scarlet said!? And you dare to say that you remember the faces of those you murdered!?"

 

"Your revenge is with Ruslan, little prince— not mine. If it were up to me, your girlfriend's death would have been swift. I merely had to bring her to the king and put you in a cell away from your father— if anything, you should thank me for not bringing you straight home."

Arthur went on a rampage, firing gusts of wind with reckless abandon at Siegmund. However, he was too far away to do any sort of damage— only one blade managed to make its way towards Siegmund, and he batted it away with Bellerophon— the projectile landing directly into the Fighter on the right's gut.

The battle is swift— Baldur waits for Siegmund to give himself even just one moment of winding up for his Bellerophon attack. The man was an anti-army fighter, but not an anti-unit one. In the heat of battle, his upswing was easily missed— but in a duel, it was easy for Baldur to find just that split second to hurl his staff's blade into Siegmund's chest. Blood spattered out of his mouth in a cough, as the man tasted fear and pain that finally cracked through with the resounding sound of shattering dark energies. Siegmund's blade fell to the floor, as he groaned and fell to his knee as well...

 

"Enough... Enough." Siegmund coughed, looking up at Baldur. "You're an impatient lot, so I'll be quick, Son of Anton. I lied. The Antons weren't Perusian— they were Rian through and through. You are of Rian blood too, boy. There was no third family. I made it up because your family was the first assassination I carried out by Ruslan. I made it up because it was the only one he didn't give me a decent or even questionably moral explanation for and I hated admitting that I killed them for no fucking reason other than to make Perus look worse than they already do. I've ran away for too long." Siegmund lowered his head, exposing his neck. "I'm sure you and your team would like to get your insults in, so get it done and finish the job. Just make sure to spit on Ruslan's grave— not for me obviously, but for the good of the kingdom."

"Please, you talk too much." The light inside the orb in his staff began to glow and the blade began to spin faster and faster as he raises it up with his right hand, "Goodbye, Siegmund!" This was followed by the butler bringing down the blade straight for the man's neck. But then, suddenly...

"Please, my one wish, dry your tears Baldur. Just focus on making a better future- *cough wheeze* for all the people of this land. Give them a chance for a bright future. No matter what land they may hail from or god they worship, let them have a chance to follow their dreams and be happy. That's the reason for our house, House Valdis', creation... I know you're more than capable of making changes in this world!"

 

...his blade stops just short of cutting the man's neck. The glow in the staff seems to pulse, the blade slowly begins to stop spinning and sparkles begin coat all over the shadow swordsman. Seigmund's wounds slowly begin to close as Baldur heals his wounds. He retracts his staff, bringing it back to his side. Staying silent, he simply looks down at the man in front of him. What did he just do?

Siegmund closed his eyes and said nothing as he continued to look to the ground, unable to see the conflict that went on behind the mask. He felt the brush of cold steel, only to feel the gentle sprinkle of healing magic. His eyes slowly opened, confusion evident on his face despite the sternness that was a constant throughout his entire encounter.

 

"...What... What did you just do?"

 

Siegmund twitched a few times, only being able to look at Baldur out of utter confusion. A bit of anger was mixed in as well— but mainly confusion. Kane was silent, clasping his cheek in thought— to think of how they could use this situation to their advantage. Lucy, consumed with anxiety, could only pray that this was the right choice. Only Arthur spoke up.

 

"What- What are you doing...!?" However, he didn't do anything to finish the job— almost as paralyzed in confusion as Lucy was. Once more, Siegmund could only focus on Baldur.

 

"...I don't understand. Leaving me alive is an overall detriment to not only Ria, but the entirety of Purgus. I made your life a living hell. Why— Why!? How could you leave a murderer like myself alive!?"

 

 

The shattering of glass cut Baldur off before he could give Siegmund the answer he desired.

Siegmund's confused expression quickly turned to that of shock, letting out a loud gasp as he threw his head back. His entire body twitched, shuddering in pain, before he fell to the ground. He was still twitching, curling up and gasping for air in pain. The answer why was evident— an arrow in his back. But of course, a simple arrow wouldn't be enough to cause such pain. The answer of why— who, exactly, came bursting through the same window that was shattered on the side. A flash of black, swiftly taking Siegmund's place on the throne to bolster his height enough to allow him to look down on the party with a glittering gold bow strung with a bowstring of dark flames. A sudden whine of fear prompted Lucy to immediately take cover behind Lizaveta and Mim.

 

“Fucking pathetic. Both of you. You have a clean kill and you have to leave me to do it myself? This pathetic excuse of a fake killer? I ought to kill the lot of you for letting this bullshit slide... and I think I will."

 

"I suppose better to take our chances while we're already in the heat of battle..." Kane muttered, glaring up at Death. His eyes quickly darted to Siegmund— who was still twitching in pain, unable to speak.

 

On the other side of the room, another window shattered. War was swift to enter, the raining glass now marking both of the Spies, Fighters, and Priests becoming immensely nervous. Notably, the window had been shattered by a flaming arrow— War now wielded a bow much like her leader, though it was significantly more normal compared to his.

 

“Backup should be arriving shortly, Death. Even sooner if that fool would—"

 

The whinnying of a horse interrupted War, who quickly rolled her eyes. From behind the group— a shadowed figure on a horse charged in, threatening to mow down the group... only to take a flying leap over the party— the figure giving a thumbs up to Lucy.

 

 

"I'm on a HORSE!—" Famine's loud exclamation was punctuated by a cough, completely ruining the effect as he trotted up to Death's side. "Rian soldiers have defected. They'll be here any minute to fight for Perus! Boy, ain't that convenient?"

 

"Wh- Defect? What the fuck is this clown show? What the hell am I missing?" Adelaida was having difficulty seeing past the crowd of Virtuous members, so she instead opted to look back down the hall— the once-Rian soldiers still rushing in. "Oh Horse the fucking freak better be joking! KAZIMIR, YOU BETTER NOT BE IN THAT CROWD OR I AM GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS!"

 

"Oh Horse, oh Horse, the General's gonna die, what are we gonna do?"

"Just play it cool, maybe the creepy guy hasn't noticed us!"

 

"W-We need to run!"

Mim's tone was casual, but if someone looked closely, they would see her hands tightening on her bow to try and prevent their shaking from being noticeable. She was scared. But she wasn't going to let that stop her.

 

"Now then, fuck face. You were asking why, yes? Well, I know you don't understand these sorts of things but some people experience things called ~*~emotions~*~ where they decide to not kill someone that's powerless because it isn't the thing they want to do. Now, I know this may be hard for you to understand, but sometimes, by not killing someone, you can actually get more out of it! Like information, or help getting in or out of somewhere, or even a friend. You never know. And I mean that literally. You never know. Personally. You will never understand it. Cause you're just a brat with anger issues who hopes that maybe some day daddy will love him if he kills enough people for him."

Baldur got a full frontal view of every long and extended second of Seigmund's death. Every twitch, every small shutter, every gasp for air. The voice rings even lounder in his head and Seigmund's face almost seems to warp into another.

 

"Please Baldur, do it for me. I know you're more than capable...

Why did you let me die?"

 

The butler falls back, landing on his bum not even fully aware of what's going on anymore. He doesn't even acknowledge the arrival of the three show stoppers or anything anyone has said thus far. He merely just stares in horror, mouth agape, shaking in his boots and heart rate sky rocketing.

Godiva herself was rather silent as the General fell, and as Baldur decided to heal Siegmund's wounds. She was lost in a mixture of emotions, betraying one's country would do that, but she was fairly confused as to why they would cut through the fortress's garrison, killing plenty of soldiers who were simply following orders, while leaving the general alive, especially when their goal seemed to be the opposite. Unfortunately, as with the rest, she didn't get the chance to voice these questions as glass shattered around them, marking the entrance of three horsemen, coupled by more footsteps as the soldiers ordered to flank them finally got around.

 

Though, unlike the rest of Virtuous, Godiva looked upon the three with even more confusion, not quite sure at what she was looking at or how she should feel, aside from recognizing them as possible enemies thanks to the poor reaction of the group,

 

"Uhm... Can I ask who these three are? I'm not too familiar of any trio of individuals like these. Are the Perusian?"

Death's expression continued to twitch as Mim ranted him out. A bit of his teeth could be seen as she taunted him— a snarl coming out of him as she mentioned his father.

 

“Keep running your mouth all you fucking want, just like that pathetic 'general'. You'll both be dead before the hour's up. Then you won't say a word— you'll just be left to regret the oxygen you wasted." Death nocked an arrow— it flared up with dark energy. The magical power seemed to resemble Darcy's weapon in a way... "Oh, and surprise surprise, we have Mister Hostage. Suicide attempt clear up your head at all, or was there just nothing there to begin with?"

 

 

Siegmund growled, still twitching as he looked up to Baldur. Blood was beginning to seep out of his mouth— a little bit out of his eyes as well, flitting in and out of consciousness.

 

"Damn it, boy... Don't pity... murderer like me— not for... second. Just... kill those... bastards..."

 

 

"The Icons of Sin— lapdogs of Perus, yeah. Death, War, Famine." Arthur was seething, clutching his tome so tightly he might accidentally rip it if he weren't careful. However, he held it together long enough to talk to Godiva. "Nothing but lousy pieces of sh- crap..."

"Bold words for someone who will be trying to breathe through a slit in their neck." Justine's grip on Joyeuse turned white. "Poisons and artifact weapons won't save you this time. Your sins will be repaid in full, mark my words."

Godiva could tell the moment Siegmund died, for she felt that the burdens of the world had finally been lifted off of her shoulders. Siegmund's last breath left him as a husk filled with nothing but regrets and the inability to fix them. A sword fell out from underneath his cape— a shining sword fit for a hero... fitting, considering the fact that it looked as if it had been untouched for several years. It laid at Baldur's knees, unfit for his use. Perhaps soon, it would find a new and more fitting master.
