Hey everybody, I've lurked here for several years now (definitely at least since I was a freshman in high school, and I'm now a sophomore in college whoops) but I was too socially awkward to make an account. I've been playing pokemon for uhhh a very long time (I want to say about 12 years? Definitely within gen4 but pre-platinum). I'm 20 years old and a computer engineering major. I really like birds, and steel is my favorite type, so naturally Skarmory is my absolute favorite pokemon of all time.

 

I'm a transmasc person (I generally consider myself a demiboy, hence the avi), and I use pretty much any pronouns that aren't she. I prefer he or they but neopronouns like xe or fae or what have you are fine too. That's actually how I found out about Reborn, while I was on the Nuzlocke forums I saw a person mention that Reborn was (a) a very hard pokemon game that (b) allows for nonbinary player characters.

 

Embarrassingly enough, I've never actually beaten the first gym. I'm not really sure why that is, beyond the fact that I keep getting overwhelmed with life every time I try to play and then being confused as to where I'm at when I come back. While I'm yapping, any pro-tips for starter choice? I think I'm between Turtwig, Rowlet, and Fennekin (But I've actually never used fennekin so who knows how that would even go).

Also for starters opinion, I think Rowlet is a good option. Has a very nice typing in its final form, which in my opinion is a great battler. But welp, it is up to you.. I always choose between Froakie and Charmander, since they're my fav one.

Get the Kricketot and try to soft reset for good stats and Run Away ability (so it gets Technician)... Evolve it at level 16. Raise your team in the Grand Hall daily trainer battles.

 

I recommend Fennekin, because it is an early item thief (Magician). Later, Psychic and Fire typing, is useful against many enemies.

 

If you cannot progress still, fish for a Lightningrod ability Goldeen. Hustle Rattata and Technician Meowth can be useful, too. 

 

Get yourself a Compoundeyes Butterfree (from Silver Dust Caterpie) and a Frisk Noibat. With those, hunt BrightPowder from Wurmple, Quick Claw from Meowth, Mystic Water for Goldeen, Sitrus Berry from trashcan Gulpin and whatever else might be found in starting area pokemon, that you can put to good use... Like BlackSludge from Grimer.

 I didn't know that lightningrod goldeen was a thing! Definitely on my to-catch list! I knew the first gym was electric type so I've kind of passed over the fishing spot in the past.

Thank you! And yeah, Rowlet is one of my favorite concepts of any starter, I love ghost/grass and a cute bird, the only thing that's held it back from being my favorite starter of all is pretty much nostalgia. Turtwig was my starter in Platinum and my main man pretty much ever since.

 

Right now my team is magician fennekin/skill link minccino/chlorophyll cherrim/lightningrod goldeen, so this is an entire team of pokemon I've never actually used before.

I think I'll also recommend fennekin. Magician is def useful but also Delphox has very good special attack and speed, so it should carry you at least until mid-late game  However, I know at least someone was able to clear the first gym with just a dartrix so it's also a good choice apparently haha
