Powder Miner
There's something disturbing me about this whole thing, but... gah, no time to think about it! Eyes on their foes, Bend tapped Pinecone's shoulder as the bee moved out of the grass. "Just a little further out, Pinecone -- I think we wanna be ready for these guys." Recruit Bend refreshes Pinecone! TURN 7 ~ ENEMY PHASE The green-winged beetle let out a long sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. Fantastic... he had been hoping that the enemy forces would engage, but Shinywings knew Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death well enough (before he'd taken that name, even) to know that he wouldn't have the patience to chase these bugs all over the grass, especially with why we're here. "Time to move in, I suppose. Cover me." The blonde spider, meanwhile, seemed frankly entirely put out by the total lack of response. After an awkward pause, he speeched at them again. "Death is not to be feared! It is merely a step along the journey that any warrior, even the most powerful and skilled, must take! And it has come time on our paths to take this step! That is how we shall make sure it remains a warrior's path rather than the path of a civilian, hiding from every threat, reduced to quivering in the presence of those with the strength and character to fight! You are those who will be witness to us." Meanwhile, Shinywings made his move, the unit of four bugs shifting in an asymmetric (and only halfway-coordinated) manner as they moved to engage the party of journeying bugs -- Stardust found herself attacked by the beetle himself, first, while one of the armored Marauders approached and the other two bugs came up short. Although she didn't find herself on the losing end of the exchange with the enemy mage, it was quite possible that Stardust would find it quite disturbing. Even aside from the fact of lethal combat, there was something about the beetle's stare that just seemed to bore into her, reading her strengths and weaknesses and openly challenging him, projecting a quiet analytical force of will that seemed to make these things fall away -- a contest of minds and of will more than perhaps anything else. Thus, she found herself utterly unable to dodge the flash of forking electricity that connected the mage's tablet to herself, twitching her arm mightily and leaving it with a line of surprisingly slight burns from hand to elbow. Shinywings, however, did not manage to avoid the bolt of light sent his way, grunting as it burned away at him more. Practically diving in front of Shinywings, one of the two armored Marauders came in at Stardust with plastic lance in hand, giving the bug no chance to recover mentally from her previous engagement before falling at her. Thankfully for Stardust, while the armored Marauder's lance looked awfully sharper the closer and closer he got to her, he didn't have Shinywings' unsettling ability to pierce through every extraneous, and a stab into the border of the grass fell quite short, with the Marauder's lance simply poking between two empty blades of grass as Stardust stepped backwards. She did not miss, however, and the armored Marauder shouted as a bolt of light magic blew a hole right through a pauldron with seemingly no effort, blowing the piece of armor into fragments. Powder Miner
Lotus' (justified, given Stardust's typical behavior) exasperation with Stardust did not stop her from continuing the fight, and she raised her bow at one of the two armored Marauders serving as guards for Shinywings and Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death. krim
Like so many times before, Ebon waited for Lotus's arrow to pierce the guard of the bug in front of them and almost immediately pulled Blackwing into the air with his lance held aloft. Then he dived. Without waiting to see the results, he drifted the massive bird a short distance away and turned his attention again to the field. The leaders finally moving spelt danger, but now they were the ones outnumbered. And that meant the end was near. Powder Miner
Although he'd been willing to let out shouts and grunts, the armored bug on the receiving end of so many assaults still didn't evidently see fit to respond with words, whether that be through inability or simply through unwillingness to speak, not even as a massive bird began to run him down. Raindrop Valkyrie
Lotus was glad all of her time as a mercenary was showing in this battle, while she didn't score many kills herself she was allowing her allies to capitalize on her expert marksmanship. Birds and other animals proved much harder targets then these dullards who moved like stone. Their armour meant nothing to a well placed arrow. Perhaps this motley lot of bug wasn't as doomed as Ebon had thought. They... still needed a mountain of work and time admittedly, especially certain members, but there was at least a grain of hope in there she could perceive. Perhaps her eyesight even lent itself to such nebulous concepts. For now she still had a battle to fight and more support to give, she had been eyeing the other bug present. The loud one seemed to be simply another flavor of the militant minded bandits they were fighting already. Perhaps his was a fervor beyond theirs, but his fanaticism wasn't something worried her. The other however seemed the much more keen. At the miminmum, he had much more grace and intent in his movement. Those were the types Lotus always prioritized. They were the only one's who would look upon still water ad see the wind to follow. She's strike before that happened. She wordlessly gestured to Bend, calling him over a finger pressed to her lips. After he did whatever it is he would do, she would strike yet again, opening the path for those that fought alongside her. She'd be the wind 'neath their wings.Bend to D7 to refresh Lotus, Lotus to E6 to fire at Shinywings.
Powder Miner
Bend made to say something as Lotus called him over, but he was plenty capable of recognizing a finger to the lips, at least, so the black ant just shrugged and did his best to silently dance in wooden armor instead -- not easy, though the way he rubbed his thumb along one of two symbols of magic on his flute indicated that he was still using it for some form of magic anyhow. Lotus is refreshed! Lotus herself made something of a judgement call, deciding that the quieter one of the two non-armored bugs was probably the smarter of the two -- in any ways, an astute observation. And, accordingly, an arrow flew. Lotus attacks Shinywings! Spoiler Shinywings is enforcing Parity! Hit: 93-14=89! Hit roll: 91, miss! Shinywings cannot counterattack! Perhaps unfortunately for Lotus, though, Shinywings wasn't just the more tactical of the two -- he was the keener of the two Marauder bosses. A glance to the side meant that unlike so many others, Shinywings caught sight of Lotus, eyes widening and body starting to duck as he noticed the fact that her longbow was outstretched and aimed at him. Things probably seemed to be in slow motion to the two of them as the fate of her shot was for a long moment unclear -- but then it skated just barely over the beetle's head, two of the vanes on the arrow actually passing through his hair. He stood there, out of range to reply, and mostly just looked rather perturbed. Map Notes (and Status below) Spoiler Map Objective: Rout the enemy! But with the current circumstances... well, it had been practically a miracle that Sting had moved without falling flat on her face in the first place. She came in, lurching forward at high speed with her sword out... and she did manage to stab Shinywings, drawing a grunt from the beetle. Unfortunately for her, though, he was still quite upright... and with a whispered sentence to concentrate despite his wounds, he let loose thunder into Sting, causing her to lock up, make an almost comical shaking sound as she was zapped, and then fall right over. Sting is down! Even as Sting fell down, though, Pinecone was stepping up... and he was stepping up with his javelin in hand. Pulling out Sting's sword, Shinywings looked at Pinecone with visible dismay, but raised his tome nonetheless, in case he was lucky. Pinecone attacks Shinywings! And yet, that bare twitch actually prevented the javelin from bouncing off of his face and knocking him to the ground, probably permanently. He paused for a significant amount of time, slackjawed, staring at Pinecone uncomprehendingly. A half-hearted bolt of thunder was sent the bee's way, but disappeared into the ground, blowing a pebble half an inch into the air. Then he began to laugh, and laugh, and laugh, sending a second bolt of thunder Shinywings' way that burned with much more accuracy. The beetle spoke, now, but his sentences were much less terse now, instead infused with an odd gaiety and triumph. "Well, I should really have been dead about now! And I will die soon anyway, I suppose. But, haha... maybe your whole philosophy is right after all, Seeker. I can't say that I expected to stand quite this tall ever again! Ah, but I suppose it matters little. Either way, Seeker... together to the end, like I promised." "Of course I would do that for you, Shiny." True to his words, Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death followed his friend's instructions to the letter, clearing out from in front of Lotus to stand behind the remaining patchwork-armored Marauder, before hefting one of his plastic hatchets in the air and sending it thrown Pinecone's way with a strong, muscled arm. A javelin was tossed in response... but it did not hit, with Seeker slapping the javelin right out of the air with the back end of his axe. And once it hit, forcing Pinecone's muscles to clench and unclench, his perseverance to stay up was finally forced to break simply by the motions of his body, the wooden-armored bee dropping to the ground with a thud as he hit the dirt heavily. Pinecone is down! "Right. Now, Scars, the archer, if you would?" Instead, she was ultimately unable to react in time to the incoming plastic lance, her own stillness working against her so that she didn't even dodge as she was stabbed. If there was a mercy there, though, it was that the Marauder's old bones weren't terribly strong, and the blow that she was dealt was not a catastrophic one, especially with the awkwardness of striking past grass. Raindrop Valkyrie
"Tch!" Lotus clicked her tongue in frustration, she had made the correct call but a second to slow. She'd have preferred to miss entirely, she'd at least have felt better than knowing it was any slight hesitation of hers that caused this misfortune. She had to give credit to Sting, she did well to gain the momentum she wished to buy with her shot despite her miss. Lotus ducked back within the grass making effort to once more disappear. She'd easily lose the old timer with her camouflage. Stillness might've been her strongest suit but that didn't mean she couldn't be swift when it was called for. She emerged from the grass elsewhere, unimpeded by the overgrowth. She prepared another shot for the same target, this time resolving to be the unerring wind. She had told another not to hesitate this day, she needed to practice her own words.Move to C8, Fire at Shinywings once more.

Astoundingly enough, she actually missed again, and once again by a hair's margin, as Shinywings started to throw himself to the side at the sight of the incoming arrow -- and he did so with something of a smile on his face. "Frankly, I'm probably as surprised that I'm proving to be this much of an obstacle as you are." Map Notes Spoiler Map Objective: Rout the enemy! Aurorix
P-pinecone just went down. That meat head is only good for soaking up hits b-but with him gone there's nothing for her to hide behind. Noticing Bend heading back to perform for Lotus she grabs him, "W-where do you think you're going!? Aren't the strong men suppose to protect the frail ladies!?" Powder Miner
"W-what the--" Bend physically shook Stardust off of him, flailing his arm up and down until she was forced to let go. "What the fuck are you talking about??? Some-- some bee thing about queens? Look, I'm trying to help deal with the bugs suddenly kicking our asses!" This was followed up with a desperate flute tweet. Recruit Bend refreshes Lotus! Given a quite literal second shot at taking Shinywings down, Lotus loosed yet another arrow at the Marauder beetle. Lotus attacks Shinywings! Spoiler Shinywings is enforcing Parity! Hit: 93-14=79! Hit roll: 13, hit! Crit: 3-2=1! Crit roll: 33, no crit. Damage: 11-2=9! Finally, finally Shinywings' luck ran out, as this particular arrow landed dead center-of-mass, slamming solidly into him and causing him to finally fall rather bonelessly to the ground. Still, despite the fact that he was dying, the Marauder second-in-command didn't seem particularly unhappy about it. "Hahaha, well... good luck going out as dramatically as I did, Seeker. I think... that I've gone and set the bar... quite high... hmmm...?" "That you have, my friend..." he reached out and put a hand on Shinywings' shoulder. "I will meet you there. Come, Scholars' bugs! Let me see what last battle you're capable of giving me!" Meanwhile, back with the party... "Oh, thank fuck." Map Notes Spoiler Map Objective: Rout the enemy! Raindrop Valkyrie
"What a pest." Lotus cursed at the bug that had caused her so many problems. It had seemed firing her next shot out of pure instinct worked, not giving him the time to notice. Her stillness had failed her. Perhaps she should learn form her own lessons. Never hesitate... never hesitate. Loose that arrow as if it were as natural as the wind blowing. "Now that you're dying feel free to speak all the words you like. They will be as empty those prior. However, I will always remember you avoided the swift wind that blows over still water. Not once, but twice. I never miss in the end. A gift to take with you to the afterlife... remember it well. I am stillness itself, I am Lotus."
krim
Ebon nodded silently as Lotus said her piece. Neither of them liked it when targets got away (not that it ever really happened) and the intimidation factor was good for business. Though before being able to see the fruits of that labor he had to take care of the rest of this job, he thought, taking Blackwing's reigns once again and diving towards one of the few bugs still standing. Powder Miner
The one remaining armored bug soon found himself the next target of the offensive of the bugs of the Scholars' Redoubt, something he bore silently even as the Ebon Knight bore down on him. Ebon Knight attacks "Elite" Plunderer A! Spoiler Ebon Knight has a Crow's Zeal! Ebon Knight is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 93+15-9=99 Hit roll: 58, hit! Crit: 3-1=2! Crit roll: 76, no crit. Damage: 11+2-6=7! Ebon Knight cancels "Elite" Plunderer A's counterattack! It's a fairly solid blow that the crow-riding mercenary deals to the armored Marauder, as the momentum cracks a wooden piece of the Marauder's armor and causes him to stagger back a step. Yet thanks to that armor and thanks to veteranship, the bug was tough -- and despite the powerful blow dealt by Ebon, he seemed to be very much willing to continue the fight, voicelessly raising his lance in both hands, bracing himself once more, and giving a look of challenge to Ebon. TURN 8 ~ ENEMY PHASE The armored bandit moved immediately to make good on his wordless challenge, his braced stance turning into a forwards one as he took a step towards Ebon -- then another -- then another-- and then swung. "Elite" Plunderer A is attacking Ebon Knight! Spoiler Ebon Knight is in grass! Ebon Knight is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 94-15-15-10=54! Hit roll: 83! Ebon Knight counterattacks! Ebon Knight is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Ebon Knight has a crow's zeal! Hit: 93+15-9=99 Hit roll: 66, hit! Crit: 3-1=2! Crit roll: 6, no crit. //CLOSE THO Damage: 11+2-6=7! It's an exchange which ultimately goes quite poorly for the Marauder -- between the grass, the state of heightened alertness that Ebon is forced to be in thanks to Stardust's fragile presence, and what speed the crow-rider does himself have, the Marauder is completely unable to touch him, but Ebon is quite able to hit him in response, The cracked armor plate is hit again, and finally falls to pieces right off of the Marauder's body, revealing a red tunic underneath, and a vulnerable spot that will almost certainly spell his end the next time he is struck. "I will leave you to your target, and I will find mine!" With that declaration, Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death came in towards Lotus, stopping short of the grass and hurling an axe at her. Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death attacks Lotus! Spoiler Lotus is in grass! Lotus is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 88-10-15-15=48! Hit roll: 34, hit! Crit: 3-2=1! Crit roll: 99, no crit. //not close lol Damage: 11-3=8! Lotus counterattacks! Lotus is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 93+15-11=97! Hit roll: 21, hit! Crit: 3-1=2! Crit roll: 64, no crit. Damage: 11-4=7! Despite having every single one of the disadvantages that his sole remaining comrade had, Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death managed to actually succeed in striking Lotus, his hatchet flying heavily through the air before striking her in the chest with a burst of blood. The slim, small bug was almost knocked off of her feet by the force, left balancing on one heel as a contrast to her usual stillness... almost. Regaining her balance, she managed to regain her poise and stillness too, and an arrow flew right back between blades of grass to strike the Marauder leader, who merely grunted and took it. "This battle is not yet over." TURN 9 ~ PLAYER PHASE Map Notes Spoiler Map Objective: Rout the enemy! Powder Miner
Shifting around a certain continually-bemused ant to make her attack, Lotus went deep into the grass, an eye kept on the lead Marauder the entire time. Lotus attacks Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death! Spoiler Lotus is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Lotus is an ambush predator! Hit: 93+15+15-11=112, autohit! Crit: 3-1=2! Crit roll: 4, no crit. (But close, again!) Damage: 11-4=7! Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death can't counterattack! Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death let out a pained, frustrated noise as an arrow zipped out of the grass beyond his range of effective retribution and struck him, rocking him a little. He was beginning to look quite bloodied now -- perhaps not quite on his last legs, but not far from it, and by the look on his face it seemed that he knew it. "You really don't slow down, do you? It would be impressive, were it not in these circumstances frustrating." He sighed. Meanwhile, a voice from near Lotus, followed up shortly by the sound of a flute. "Frustrated for him is better than bleeding out for us, so, really, I'm all for this!" Bend refreshes Lotus! And, duly enough... Lotus attacks Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death! Spoiler Lotus is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 93+15-11=97! Hit roll: 40, hit! Crit: 3-1=2! Crit roll: 28, no crit. Damage: 11-4=7! Seeker-of-a-Dignified-Death can't counterattack! Taking little heed of the blonde spider's complaints, Lotus just aimed her bow once more, and let another arrow fly... and this one came to an impact as well, lodging very near to the other one in his chest. Seeker was having trouble breathing now... but his frustrated noise turned into a growl, and he clutched the hatchet in his hands even tighter than before. A terrible resolve filled his body, and he stood up a bit straighter despite his tenuous grasp on life. "There. With the longbow aside, does anyone care to indulge me in one last fight?" Meanwhile, while all of this was going on, Ebon was providing the other one of the Marauders with his own frustrating, uncounterable scenario. Ebon Knight attacks "Elite" Plunderer A! Spoiler Ebon Knight has a Crow's Zeal! Ebon Knight is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 93+15-9=99 Hit roll: 69, hit! Crit: 3-1=2! Crit roll: 82, no crit. Damage: 11+2-6=7! Ebon Knight cancels "Elite" Plunderer A's counterattack! There weren't dramatics with this fight like the ongoing scrapping with Seeker, nor did the armored bug manage to hang onto life in the same way as his leader. Instead, the bug was hit by a downwards jab from crow-top, which slammed right into unprotected flesh now that the bug's chestplate had broken apart, and with a "Rrrngh..." he slowly toppled backwards onto the dirt with a thud, leaving Seeker as the only one standing of those that had ambushed the party. Aurorix
Shaking in her shoes Stardust meanwhile had wrapped herself completely within a blade of grass trying to hide herself. Cowering once more for the fear of death only intensified with the fall of her brother. If a meat bag like him fell what chance did she have anyways? Then she saw Lotus shoot the man with two arrows like it was nothing. M-maybe she could actually help... no that stupid! She's stupid for evening wanting to come! However, before the bug knew it her arm was raised and her magic charged finger tip pointed at ant. Full of panic, her body acted on its own before. . . . PEW! . One small yet potent bolt of light magic went straight towards the pin cushioned axe user's head.
