Powder Miner
Without warning, there was the whistle of an arrow slicing through the air - thankfully for the vulnerable bird-riding mercenary, it wasn't aimed at him, but rather at a certain redheaded ant. Lotus attacks Corporal Dart! Spoiler Corporal Dart is enforcing Parity! Hit: 95-17=78! Hit roll: 55, hit! Crit: 3-3=0, no crit. Damage: 11-3=8! That whistling sound was followed by the thk of the arrow finding flesh, causing Corporal Dart to cry out and clutch at her arm. She looked around frantically, failing at first to realize who struck her, until her eyes finally landed on the stealthily still mantis, holding her bow, eyes locked on Dart, at which point her lips curled into a snarl. "Oh, you bitch! I'm gonna come for you as soon as I-" Unfortunately for Corporal Dart, Lotus was not the only bug that she had to contend with - Sting came hurtling in at her, and Dart barely managed to react in time to deal with the assault, body twitching to face Sting with a single frantic motion, as Dart raised her knives. Sting attacks Corporal Dart! Spoiler Corporal Dart is enforcing Parity! Hit: 86-17=69! Hit roll: 100, miss! Corporal Dart counterattacks! Corporal Dart is enforcing Parity! Hit: 89-19=70! Hit roll: 25, hit! Crit: 13-3=10! Crit roll: 48, no crit. Damage: 10-2=8! Yet, somehow, despite the precarious position that she found herself, Corporal Dart proved what gave her name and probably her rank, that frantic motion being interrupted by a second one almost in the opposite direction - but instead of being twisted up on her feet and falling to the ground, Dart ended up inside Sting's guard, dodging the thrust of her rapier and managing a solid blow with one knife, before she flowed back out of immediate strike range from Sting. "Now, how do you like that?" Brilliant, meanwhile, loped on over around poor Secludie to crouch down and heal the big lug of bee that seemed to have, for now, met his match in the squad of enemies they'd defeated. "Well, admittedly I'd kinda been hoping this all wouldn't happen... but, uh, don't worry, I'll make you great as grass!" And she booped him a little with her staff - truthfully speaking, not something necessary, but certainly theatric. (Curiosity, from her shoulder, waved a much much tinier staff at him, complete with a single magic sparkle to add to Brilliant's staff's!) Spoiler Brilliant Deduction is getting a little help! Pinecone is healed for (16+2)/2=9 HP! Recruit Bend looked at Corporal Dart with a look that could best be characterized as a mixture of disgust and fear. "Awwwww man, these people really are fucking nuts. Scuse me Stardust, scuse me Pinecone-- gonna just--" tooooot "Lotus PLEASE take care of her!" Lotus attacks Corporal Dart! Spoiler Corporal Dart is enforcing Parity! Hit: 95-17=78! Hit roll: 77, hit! Crit: 3-3=0, no crit. Damage: 11-3=8! Lotus very well obliged. Dart may have been able to dodge Sting's somewhat clumsy strike, but dodging another nearly silent arrow from a p-particularly still archer with a longbow was another thing entirely. Dart suddenly found herself on her back on the ground, looked towards her legs to see another arrow jutting out of her thigh, and then sighed. "Dammit." Corporal Dart is dead! TURN 2 ~ ENEMY PHASE The lone surviving ant of her squad (probably), the initiate fire mage looked around at the situation for a moment - that had been fast. But... "Well, guess what, buddy, she's not the ONLY one of us who's 'fucking nuts'--" "Why are you proud of that??" "--so you better watch out, 'cuz I'm coming for YOU!" Fire Initiate A attacks Recruit Bend! Spoiler Recruit Bend is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 88-20-15=53! Hit roll: 81, miss! A bolt of fire flew past Bend's head, preempted by him flinching violently out of the way and covering his face, and followed by him slowly uncovering it, peeking out, noticing he hadn't been hit, and then extending a middle finger at his assailant. "MISSED! Ha-ha!" Meanwhile, Flies Freely leaned in towards one of the snipers he was working with. "Hey, I'm gonna be talking with those guys, so I can't be carrying you right now. You lot should probably get moving." There was a groan in response. "Really? You've got to be kidding... ugh. Well, figures. I guess you'll probably end up scooting soon, the way this is going, even if we're getting our licks in. C'mon, folks, let's get moving." He then drove his pigeon to the very top of the edge in the sidewalk he was standing over. "Hey, hey, hey, Ebon, so here's the deal! Doubt you remember me much, but, uh, if you do, it'll be as Calmness Under Fire. I was one of the mantis who was around you briefly - I saw you leave for the whole mercenary thing, and I just have to say, totally inspirational. Made me realize I ought to pick up and run life another way myself." The snipers, meanwhile, scooted away. TURN 3 ~ PLAYER PHASE Map Notes Spoiler Objective: Rout the enemy! krim
Ebon sat upon Blackwing silently as the other mantis approached him, and listened to what he had to say. To tell the truth, he did remember the old name, but not the face. Either way, this Freely didn't seem more than Lotus's age. "Inspiration....?" he asked, a bit off guard. Now THAT was something he had never heard before. "Listen kid,..I'm only doing this because I have to. There's nothing to be inspired by or proud about in taking lives. If I had to guess, the people here have their own problems, too." he grimaced and shook his head. "I'm not going to tell you to go back home, but make sure this is really what you want before potentially digging your own grave." glancing down towards the snipers running for their lives, he added "Especially if you're planning on switching sides." Trash
Eyes shut, Secludie quivered- "Ahhhhhh-" One eye cracked open. "Ahh...?" "Eh? I got him...?" Somewhat nonplussed, she straightened up. Powder Miner
"Aw naw naw naw man, it's not about their cause. I don't really care about that all that much - I'm just here 'cause they've got the money and they're kinda far out from the Domains." "You see... I just wanted out, it was awful back there in the Domains. Everything was so damned rigid, so locked in officers and hierarchies and all that... wasn't room to breathe! I wasn't really sure what to do, but then you left and became a mercenary, and I realized... well, hey, maybe I can manage that too! And, so, eheh, well, here we are." Unlurking Sentinel
The red-haired black ant seemed particularly interesting. Corporal Dart, was it? Recorder knew that her- that the expedition's survival was much more important than the enemy's, and that woman was clearly a very dangerous warrior; she knew this when she threw her chakram... but still, it would have been nice to be able to put down more than her name and face. And then, suddenly, one of the enemy commanders began hero-worshiping one of the delegation members. Recorder immediately felt like she needed to act fast, but... perhaps the mercenary in question had the situation handled better. The enemy has multiple snipers with them, this is a delicate situation. Perhaps she could pull herself behind the enemy lines instead...? She dashed to the near edge of the path to look for an opening. Life-Recorder to E-
krim
"I suppose I can sympathize with that. I was never the biggest fan of how things were run, but I put up with it until..." he looked pained for a second but shook himself out of it after a few moments. "Well, that's not important. If it's money you want, I'm sure we can work something out. My company and I are getting paid quite handsomely for this job, and payment is individual." he purposefully failed to mention that this "company" only included himself and Lotus. Looking down at the battlefield again, he added. "Your current employers aren't going to be alive to pay you by the end of this anyway, and I'm not one to leave behind discarded gold." Powder Miner
Flies Freely laughed a bit. "Geez, dude, I'm not gonna fleece you, the shinies are just a means to an end and I only really need as much as I have to use to keep getting bye. Hey, I'm gonna be honest with you, I was ready to hand over a sum of it myself to get out of here if it was what it took, I'm really not actually looking to guy for these die-- er, uh, die for these guys, you know? krim
"You were going to PAY to be conscripted?" Ebon laughed in a booming voice, dropping all pretense of the gravelly intimidator. Blackwing, for his part, cawed in amusement as well. Though Ebon still couldn't quite tell if the bird actually understood what he was saying, or if he was just mimmicking the mannerisms of his rider. "Well, I certainly wouldn't complain about that. We'll talk more business when this is over. For now uh...give me a second." he looked about until he spotted Brilliant Deduction on the battlefield below and eased the crow in her direction. Returning to his normal guise, he motioned from above towards Flies Freely. "That one is with me now. We can talk about it later." he said matter-of-factly, and not waiting for a response, glided into position and dive bombed the mage that he had been ignoring up until that point.C6, kill Initiate A

He's completely shameless." Ebon, however, had already elected to continue his assault on the attacking ant forces, aiming specifically at the rather unfortunate mage who was now the last remaining of her squad (well, probably, judging by the delayed reaction of the other mage). "C'MOOOON SHITBIRDDDD-" Ebon Knight attacks Black Ant Fire Initiate A! Spoiler Ebon Knight has a crow's zeal! Hit: 95-13=82! Hit roll: 74, hit! Crit: 3-3=0, no crit. Damage: 11+2-0=13! Powder Miner
Despite the less than stellar conditions some of the travelling party were in, Brilliant Deduction's reticence seems to have turned into exuberance with the effective demolishment of the first group of ants assaulting her and her little retinue - she practically skips over to Mercy Harefoot, who has been lying there for what feels like an eternity. "Come now, Harefoot! We can't just have you lying there, can we? A little bit of magic from yours truly, and my lovely assistant, will get you moving again!" Brilliant Deduction heals Mercy Harefoot! Spoiler Brilliant Deduction has a little help! Healing: (16+2)/2=9! Mercy Harefoot is healed for 9 HP! She pointed her staff towards his half-conscious body, and proceeded to jab him with it, before whirling back. "Bend, get me moving!" "Mmmmmyeah sure." Recruit Bend refreshes Brilliant Deduction! To a somewhat unenthusiastic tweet of a flute, Brilliant skipped off towards Soggyshanks. "Soggyshanks, my reliable friend! Let us keep making sure that you don't falter in this fight, yes?" She twirled her staff again, a wide swooping circle that nearly hit Pinecone in the side of the head, and poked him with it. Brilliant Deduction heals Soggyshanks! Spoiler Brilliant Deduction has a little help! Healing: 16+2=18! Mercy Harefoot is healed for 9 HP! TURN 3 ~ ENEMY PHASE While Flies Freely caaaaasually swooped off, the apparent leader of the snipers let out a sigh. "Right, well, I'm not that shameless. Hold them off for a bit, hit the people who are likely to be able to reach us. Hitting and running isn't going to be viable with that damn bird, so let's just wait til Gloom comes up to reinforce us. You lot take care of the mage down there, I'll see what I can do about the armored spider!" "Uhhhhh, you got it, boss!" The evidently-subordinate sniper stepped forwards a bit, raised his bow, pulled the string back, and sent an arrow arcing lightly over the jagged hill created by the crack in the sidewalk - and when it came down, it came down at one of the team's red ants. Sniper B attacks Faithful Diligence! Spoiler Faithful Diligence is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 93-19-15=59! Hit roll: 50, hit! Crit: 3-3=0, no crit chance. Damage: 11-0=11 damage! It's a somewhat close call for a moment, as the projectile falls short of her face and torso, but unfortunately the ant girl, despite her speed, is somewhat unlucky here - having her leg extended to step forwards, the arrow proceeds to bury itself in her thigh, something she is evidently not terribly well-defended against as the attack meets nearly no resistance. Meanwhile, without speaking any more (deeming it not necessary and distracting from the task at hand), the informal leader of the sniper trio looses an arrow straight at Soggy as he begins to turn around the crack in the sidewalk. Sniper A attacks Soggyshanks! Spoiler Soggyshanks is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 93-8-15=70! Hit roll: 83, miss! ...and that arrow proceeded to bounce harmlessly off of Soggyshanks' shoulderplate - Soggyshanks could feel the impact against his shoulder-plate, and it scratched the wood a bit, but that was about all that the lead sniper could claim he'd done. "Well, damn." "See? All you have to do is go with me and you're fine!" Finally, the last of the three snipers moved towards the giant crack and aimed upwards at the same spot as his fellow subordinate, juuust barely able to see poor Diligence's antenna peeking up over it. And so she got a second arrow coming her way. Sniper C attacks Faithful Diligence! Spoiler Faithful Diligence is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Faithful Diligence is being given a trial by the gods! Hit: 93-15-4=74! Hit roll: 40, hit! Crit: 3-3=0, no crit chance. Damage: 11-0=11 damage! Depending on how melodramatic Diligence was feeling, perhaps she could have termed this a trial of the gods - without any way of knowing that she was mostly targeted for being the only bug these two archers could reach with the ability to fire over the crack, it would have seemed to her like two arrows came out of nowhere. The second of these was aimed a bit more on-target than the first, hitting the poor ant in the ribs and sending her toppling over. Faithful Diligence is downed! Meanwhile, watching this battle begin to play out, a dark-haired ant with circles under her eyes began to mutter under her breath. "I don't know what that stupid mercenary is doing... ruining everything... all were supposed to come down here... now I have to climb... this stupid human thing... ugh... everyone, get moving!" RedMageCole
Pinecone, as he hurried off, was curious as to why Diligence was calling him out. He thought for a moment. Ah— Diligence, Deduction, two different people, two different names. He hadn't had to remember so many names in a long time! He was quick to turn to correct himself, completely missing the fact that Deduction almost bonked him in the head with a staff... Only to see Diligence getting riddled full of arrows before he could even correct himself. His cheerful, enthusiastic face quickly turned sour as he moved past the cracks, staring down at the archers. "You will not harm Diligence, or anyone for that matter, ever again." With that plainly in his head, Pinecone whirled back his javelin as he awaited Stardust's go-ahead, and attempted to hurl it right through the archers— ignoring his own injuries in the process. Powder Miner
Starting off the movement of the party of travelling bugs round the bend towards their foes was the march of the bumblebees - if "march" means one running around screaming while the other one plods determinedly towards his foes with stabbing on the mind. While the one that was screaming didn't seem like a threat to the lead sniper... well, he had a sinking feeling about the big one. Pinecone attacks Sniper A! Spoiler Pinecone is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 85+15-8=92! Hit roll: 42, hit! Crit: 2-2=0, no crit chance. Damage: 9-3=6! Sure enough, Pinecone's javelin promptly stabbed through the fabric armor of the archer - but the archer found that he did in fact very much survive the ordeal, at least for now. He grinned up at Pinecone - bleeding some, but evidently pleased he wasn't out of it quite yet. "Guess I'm just going to have to hold you lot off for Gloom personally then, huh?" But of course Pinecone was only one of the people barreling in towards the poor ant - and chief among the ones following up was a certain sea-spider who it's just maybe possible wasn't too happy about getting shot, armor or no. With a shouted taunt, Soggyshanks hurtled at the sniper, causing him to flinch back a bit. Soggyshanks attacks Sniper A! Spoiler Soggyshanks is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 91+15-8=98! Hit roll: 43, hit! Crit: 2-2=0, no crit chance. Damage: 12-3=9! The archer was moved back even more as the axe slammed into him, causing him to take a step backwards and cough. This had been a solid hit, much more solid than the one that Pinecone had dealt out, and the black ant could only smile weakly up at Soggyshanks after receiving it. "Well, buddy, if I'm going to be realistic about it, it probably is about all I've got, yeah. You two - keep going! Keep alive and get behind Gloom's troops!" It wasn't long after that before an arrow came flying out from behind the rest of the Redoubt bugs towards him. Lotus attacks Sniper A! Spoiler Lotus is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 95+15-8=102, autohit! Crit: 3-2=1! Crit roll: 63, no crit. Damage: 11-2=9! And before he could get another sentence out, the arrow buried itself into the sniper, deep into his stomach. He collapsed to his knees, looked up... and shrugged. "Always was comin'. But I did stand my ground." He extended, entirely casually, a middle finger into the air where Flies Freely was in the distance, and then half fell and half laid down onto his back, looking almost as if he was relaxing on the ground. Sniper A is defeated! "B-boss!" The shooting and likely coming death of his kind-of-superior was met with a cry of dismay from one of the other snipers, whereas the other just seemed to sigh and slump a little. "Don't worry, we'll follow your last orders to the end oh no-" Life-Recorder attacks Sniper B! Spoiler Life-Recorder is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 86+15-8=93! Hit roll: 84, hit! Crit: 2-2=0, no crit chance. Damage: 8-3=5! Sniper A counterattacks! Life-Recorder is hard to follow! Life-Recorder is extra buoyed by Stardust's (alleged) Charisma! Hit: 93-26-15-15=37! Hit roll: 7, hit! Crit: 3-4=-1, no crit chance. Damage: 11-2=9! As the sniper was making a declaration, a wooden disc flew out and bounced across his head, knocking it back a little and opening a gash - but aside from the moment of initial panic, the ant actually looked fine. Still, that moment of initial panic turned into a moment of crambling, continued panic, where the sniper fumbled his bow a little, hurriedly scrabbled for an arrow, got one, and wildly... actually... hit? "Holy shit..." To the ant's own amazement, his terrified shot had hit solidly, slamming into the spider-girl and bloodying her. Meanwhile, as the combat continued, there was a flurry of healing. Harefoot was quick to deal with the injured ant of the party's own, shaking off his own sadness at the carnage to prevent Diligence from becoming a needless victim of it. Mercy Harefoot heals Faithful Diligence! Spoiler Healing: 16/2=8 HP healed! Sighing to himself a little, Bend walked over and helped Diligence up - something with which it is possibly that Harefoot helped. With the poor redheaded ant back on her feet nearly as quickly as she'd been brought off of them, Bend gave her a light pat on the shoulder before orienting her the way she was supposed to be going and playing a three-note ditty with one hand. "Might as well get going - I don't know if you've ever experienced that kind of wound before, but at this point you'll just want to keep on moving and make sure you're with everyone else." Faithful Diligence is refreshed! Maybe... just... freshed in this instance... As for Brilliant Deduction, well, there was a twirl from her staff that was actually meant to make contact with Pinecone. "I really appreciate your dedication to our safety, but do spare some thought for your own! You are a part of this party as well, you know! Surely you can't protect the whole party if you can't protect yourself!" Brilliant Deduction heals Pinecone! Spoiler Brilliant Deduction has a little help! Healing: 16+2=18 HP healed! (And finally, even as she drifted into a land deep in her imagination, Sting did find the presence of mind to patch herself up after sustaining some wounds earlier.) Sting uses a vulnerary! Spoiler Healing: 10 HP restored! Map Notes Spoiler Objective: Rout the enemy! Road and sidewalk tiles usually just count as plains for the purpose of movement, including the lines between panels of the sidewalk. However, cracks in the sidewalk function as Cliffs and are impassable! Pebbles on the sidewalk function as Pillars. Moving on or off the sidewalk costs 2 MOV. Attacks from the sidewalk to off of the sidewalk effectively have WTA, and attacks off of the sidewalk to on the sidewalk effectively have WTD! This stacks with actual WTA and WTD.
