I know that the 2 are and that physical contact will result in the less mentally strong one being erased/assimilated, but Melanie did not have any insurance that I am aware of to ensure that she would come out on top, so I don't see the logic in that. For the question What would she have to gain by touching and absorbing Melia? Well, she gain more power, can do things that she couldn't before, it can be many things.
