AZKnight
The following Pokemon have had their English names revealed on Bulbapedia as of December 22:
Snivy Tepig Oshawott Patrat Pansage Pansear Panpour Munna Musharna Pidove Blitzle Gigalith Woobat Drilbur Excadrill Sewaddle Sandile Darmanitan Cofagrigus Zorua Zoroark Minccino Gothitelle Reuniclus Alomomola Klink Axew Braviary Reshiram Zekrom
HOWEVER, Ame has provided a list of English names that I trust of every Pokemon. Feel free to refer to that over Bulba's outdated listed.
----------------------------------------------------
What do you guys think of the English names that have been revealed so far? I have been fearing this so much from the beginning. Why? Because of the overexposure we have been getting of the games before they come out more than any of the other games. I look at Darmanitan and I still think Hihidaruma and I need to stop that. These are the names we are going to call them, we must get used to it (unless you're Ame who probably will still call them by their Japanese names). This does not mean we should scorn the new English names as many of them are decent or great, but some just flat out suck. Patrat - How can I put this...oh, I know: YOU'RE NOT A RAT! I like the name and could see it being another option for Rattata or other rat-like Pokemon. But Patrat is based on a prairie dog / chipmunk / meerkat, not a rat. Good name, wrong match. Pansage / Pansear / Pansoak - I have mixed feeling about these. To my knowledge, the Pan in all of their name is referring to Chimpanzees because they are monkeys. Subtle, but this subtle is weird for Pansear. Why? Because pan searing is a form of cooking. Which oddly makes sense with the fire motif. But then if you start thinking that way and not the chimpanzee way, the other two make less since. I like the pan idea, just wish they hadn't chosen Sear for the fire one. Pidove - It's a combination of pigeon and dove. I like it. Excadrill - I like the components of this name. Excavation and Drill pretty much describe its design and function as a mole with hands that turn into a drill. I just don't like how it sounds, does not roll off the tongue. Hope that changes as I grow accustomed to it. Sewaddle - Another name I like. It calls upon the idea of sewing which matches its design as a caterpillar that possibly produces silk for cloth and sewing. The waddle part I guess would refer to how caterpillars waddle around. It's a good name. Sandile - It's a Crocodile that lives in the sand. Simplistic, straightforward and great name. Gothitelle - At least they aren't hiding the fact that it is a Goth Pokemon. Alomomola - Every time I look at this name I want to say Alomola and cut out that second om. That repetition is not smooth when I say it out loud. I understand all sources it takes its name from like the fish it's based on, being a mom figure, and aloha, but it does not roll off the tongue. Klink - Sounds more like a nickname you would give the Pokemon rather than it's official name. Not a bad name though. Axew - It's a dragon that is based around having an axe in its mouth. I approve the name and hope the evolutions follow the trend. Braviary - Oh I frown upon this one most of all. I loved the Japanese name and for a long time though that it was its released English name. Wargle just sounds so cool and you understand right away where the name is coming from: War or Warrior and Eagle because when you look at it, it's a warrior eagle! But the Braviary went a completely different way by combining Bravery with Aviary. It's not even a real combination, looks more like some misspelled the word Bravery with an ia instead of an e. I shall mourn the loss of a cool name to one that is just a lack of proper spelling.
Administrators Amethyst Posted January 23, 2011 Administrators Share Posted January 23, 2011 ....You do know all of the English names sans the event pokemon have been leaked now? However I didn't save that link, so just going off the above list: Names that I do like: Blitzle Sandile Minccino Gothitelle Names that I do not like: Tepig Oshawott Patrat Pidove Axew Names that make me want to kill myself: Woobat. Zubat has turned into Woobat, which evolves into Swoobat. Dear lord strike me down now.
AZKnight
I couldn't find the leaks in any organized place, so I just went off the officially released ones. Easier to use one place rather than searching for scattered ones and trying to figure out which ones are legitimate. I warned you about Woobat. Everyone thought things would be soooo much better without Zubat and you were giddy about a Psychic Bat. Now you see it for what it is like everyone else: Horrible! Mashew
ya know aside from the horrible horrible name.... Woobat is actually a pretty good pokemon.
Administrators Amethyst Posted January 23, 2011 Administrators Share Posted January 23, 2011 Actually, Woobat is still miles better than Zubat. Why? Psychic > Poison any day of the week. More importantly, it doesn't troll you through the entirety of Black and White. Like I seriously can only think of two locations wherein I encountered wild Woobat. Dragonz996
Emboar sounds better than whatever its Japanese name is in my opinion. Genosect sounds better than Genosekuto too. I thought Bulbapedia had all the English names o_O

Maelstrom
Braviary sounds pro to me. Wish it was the name for a better bird pokemon. That Blitzle stole my shnitzel. it's w/e, not bad. Gigalith is also pro. Love it. Pignite is apparently the second form of tepig. alright. Patrat I like a lot. Will never use him, but the name is a perfect fit. cofagrigus- not sure how to prounounce that. coffin + egregious? coff-uh-gree-gus? If so, me like too. AZKnight
I am using this article on Bulbapedia for my list of official releases: List of English and Japanese Pokemon Names
In some cases, the trademarked romaji is similar to the English name with the exception of one or two letters. The names of new Pokémon will be added as their names become available to the public.
As you can see, the romaji is NOT always the same as the official English release. Leaks that come out may be correct, but I prefer to wait for the official release to avoid thinking any false leaks are correct. Heck, not even all of the Pokemon have trademarked romaji yet. Kajj
I think the best name on that list is.... Zoroark. <
Maelstrom
That's cuz romaji is the literal translation and totally rough around the edges. like kompyuutaa is computer. because japanese sucks as a language ok, it doesn't, they tend to have extra vowels in their words. Like Desu. no one pronounces the u at the end. And the use double A's to make R sounds. cuz again, their language sucks at being a language and representing sounds. Don't get me started on the stolen headache they call kanji. Guess it's their fault they live on a tiny island where they could only copy anything from their only neighbors, the chinses. And like good neighbors, they warred alot and love each other not much. oh my how I've rambled. Silly, silly japanese minor of mine. ^~^;
Administrators Amethyst Posted January 30, 2011 Administrators Share Posted January 30, 2011 English has no room to talk about have extra vowels in its words. Here's the full list of English names, sans the event Pokemon: http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7926/g5english.jpg
N8theGr8
It must have taken you forever to make the OP all nice and icon'd like that. On topic, best English name = Braviary. I thought Wargle was cool, but that's just...badass.
AZKnight
I trust Ame and I guess Bulbapedia is just slow at updating. Or extra careful. Either way, I trust Ame's list and have included it in the original list. Serperior - Just like Braviary, I do not like it when they make the name the exact same as a real word but merely spelled differently. I get the name, Serpent + Superior, but when I read the name I'm going to pronounce it like Superior with a slight and barely noticeable difference in the e and u. It doesn't feel like a Pokemon name. Felt the same way about Seel, too. Emboar - Similar problem to Braviary and Serperior, but I think there is enough of a pronounciation difference between Emboar and Ember that I won't mind it. There's enough emphasis on the boar part. They're cutting it close though. Samurott - I like the name, but this time they screwed up the Pokemon. Dewott looking awesome with the whole samurai otter theme. Then for some reason they did make Samurott bipedal. Why?! It's not even otter looking now and barely samurai like. I like the Pokemon and the name, but would have liked it better had they done something more like Dewott. Simisage / Simisear / Simipour - ....nevermind, they're all stupid. Fucking hate them all. Conkeldurr - Noooooooooooooo! They were so close to having witty if not silly names for the entire evolution line. Timburr. Oh! It's holding a piece of wood or timber. Genius! Gurdurr. Oh! It's holding a steel beam or girder. Genius! Conkeldurr. Uhhhh....What? I just do not get it at a passing glance like the other two. It's holding two concrete pillarst so I guess the Conk part refers to concrete but...? I looked into it and someone suggested that it's supposed to be pronounced Conk + Elder because it holds concrete and is the elder evolution, as shown by it having a small grey beard and wrinkles. I can kind of get behind it, but it's such a divergence from the other two that I just don't know if I can like it. Whimsicott - Whim...whimis...whimsis....whimsic.....whimsicott? How the fuck do you pronounce that?! I'm sure I'll come to say it with ease in time, but I don't get what it means. Whimsical? But...is there anything else? Can someone try and sell this name to me?! Scraggy / Scrafty - Whaaaaaaat? I don't follow... Hell, Scraggy is an official English word! I would have thought they'd go a different direction. Or one that I would understand. The other names I'm looking through I either like, neutral, can't really describe or just don't care. These make me hurt though for the most part. Maelstrom
I have to agree with you on emboar, not with serperior. Which is very reminiscent of Rhyperior. Sir-perior. I find the difference very noticeable, yet still very fluid as a name. I like it. Conkledur- however it's prounce, i also hate it with a passion. should've gone with a play on boulder despite it being a step back from a girder. Zebstrika- i like the way it sounds. zeb-stry-kuh. which compensates for its rather uninspired pairing of zebra and striker. Krookodile- crook? is that why he has the black facemask stripe? I MUCH prefer krokorok to that name. I think Waruvial should have been kept as its name. People already know Waru(i) means 'bad' in japanese (from Waluigi), and i like the way it cleanly adds the reference for gavial. Swanna- don't like the pokemon, and i sure as hell don't like the supremely uninspired name. NO Vanilluxe- the ice cream pokemon, and eaten live by hungry dessert lovers in the summer, this pokemon makes me lol. I like its names. Sawsbuck- i don't get it. why is there a saw in there? me no likey. Scrafty- behind pantslizard's derp face is a dark and crafty mind at work. I like it. foongus amoongus- makes me lol. it works for me. Eelectross- sounds pretty boss to me. Beartic- I sure as hell hope its pronounced bay-artic and not bear-tic. Otherwise.... SOUL. SMASH. Administrators Ikaru Posted January 31, 2011 Administrators Share Posted January 31, 2011
Whimsicott - Whim...whimis...whimsis....whimsic.....whimsicott? Can someone try and sell this name to me?!
Probably a combination of Whimsical and Cotton; It makes sense if you see its animated sprite, cause it kinda bounces around innocently, hiding its inner evil... However, I think I like Erufuun better. And Mael, Sawsbuck, from what I've heard, is... S pring A utumn W inter S ummer Needless to say, um, no. ________________________________________ As for my own thoughts, everything has been covered here by someone else already, except for one. Volcarona - Sure it might be biased because I love this Pokemon, but, Amaria actually helped me realize this one: The Volcano bit was obvious, but, the second half of the name comes from Corona, which is a small ring you see around the sun during an eclipse... as such: I'm an astronomy freak; sue me. It's also why I love Cresselia, Lunatone and Solrock so much. Plus I just think Volcarona sounds good for some reason. *shrug* If it wasn't 1:24 AM I'd have a better response, I swear. Also: *smashes head against wall repeatedly* I MUST ... KNOW ... MELOETTA'S ... ENGLISH .... NAME.
