Reborn, Rebalanced [EP19 COMPATIBLE]

Nova

Recommended Posts

Hello, Reborn! Long time no see.

When EP19 comes out I will release a mod that re-balances every Pokemon, move and ability in the game. While the changes I've made here are made to be enjoyable by everyone, the primary intent is to provide a better and more interesting Nuzlocke experience.

The PBS editing is already complete, and the files are included below. Note that not everything is functional as of yet, and almost all abilities + some moves still work as they do in the vanilla game, because the scripts have to be edited in the e19 script itself (when it comes out) to work, which is more complicated than simply replacing the PBS files.

This is still a work in progress and subject to many changes. Please give your thoughts and suggestions!

The goals are as follows:

1) Slightly improve weak Pokemon and weaken some stronger ones. Pokemon are NOT created equal, but each is worth considering for the point at the game it is obtainable.

2) Buff weak abilities and nerf strong abilities to make nearly every ability worth considering. Almost every Pokemon gets 3 abilities, all of them worth considering.

3) Buff underused and niche moves to add more versatility in viable move pools. This is primarily done by buffing signature moves and turning useless status moves into damaging moves with their usual effects as side effects.

3b: Add some important egg moves to the mons' standard move learn pool.

4) Nerf cheese tactics and a few types of annoying randomness.

5) Add more sources of conditional damage reduction, accuracy boosting, and critical hit avoidance.

6) Slightly buff early-game moves to provide a crutch for the first few chapters.

7) Bring the starter choices closer together in terms of power, especially early-game.

8) Add a bunch of unused type combinations to the game, and ensure that mons with the same type fulfill different functions.

9) Replace freezing with Frostbite, which no longer blocks actions but instead functions like Burn, dealing damage over time and lowering Special Attack.

10) Reduce the power of set-up sweeps by drastically lowering the PP of set-up moves.

11) Make some Quality of Life changes that speed up the game and reduce the need for grinding.

Thanks for the feedback!

Looks like all the PBS editing will have to be redone since the EP19 scripts seem to be in a different format than former PBS scripts. It'll take a bit longer to release the mod than expected.

Not a big deal though.

I havent read through all ability changes but what you are doing looks interessting.

The stat changes seem a bit unbalanced tho, especially since your aim was to buff weaker pokemon.

If i have a weaker pokemon that might be able to make up for its low stats through buffing itself (or being buffed) the new ratios make this very hard to impossible.

The new debuff scaling down to 33% seems still reasonable (factor 3)

but the new buff scaling seems very weak, it only doubles after 6 stages. Why even take the risk of buffing up further if you dont get anything in return.

If 400% max is too high maybe try 300% as a middle ground?

With the current change buffing up feels entirely useless after 2 stages.

Hello Nova! I'm working on a framework that lets you load PBS files dynamically and append or replace the game cache, which should make it a lot easier to get your mod running and also would make it compatible with other mods that add/edit pokemon!

So far I've only modified the section of the compiler that handles pokemon.txt, but I'm working on moves, abilities and others! I will likely not release it until E19 stable is out, both to give me time to make sure it actually works and because it changes/potentially breaks a lot of things and I don't want to screw up the beta testing process, however, let me know and I'll give you access to the github.

I like difficult games...so that's primarily my goal. I like the idea of making weaker mon's stronger though.

I think with the un-modded game, I don't like how you can just spam healing items after buffing. I think there should be more of a place for strong attackers, and your proposed changes do that.

Personally, I would like it if (somehow) the proposed changes only apply to the player's mons, rather than the A.I. opponent's mons. That's because the player can always use roar or whirlwind if the A.I. keeps spamming buffing moves...but the A.I. may not be smart enough to do that...but if you don't want to deal with that, or that's not possible this is still an improvement to me.

I liked Memeborn and Memeforms a lot, that dramatically increase difficulty. I was able to set up 2 particular mons that could wipe out entire teams singlehandedly though. I won't say what they are to avoid spoilers, but their brokenness was related to buffing ability.

Your changes would make that less viable.

Here are all of the Pokemon and move changes in the new E19 script format. I've made a lot of changes since the original changelog in the first post, so I'll update the changelog soon.

But I replaced the script files in the Reborn folder with these edited ones and added them to the Data/Mods folder and it didn't make any changes to the actual game. And the compile feature seems to be broken.

@alchemis Would the mod loader fix this?

The issue is that those files exist, but aren't actually implemented into the game yet, compiling is as of now still done from PBS files. Those files are part of a refactor that is still in progress. The ModLoader as of yet also does not support loading hashes directly but it'll be coming soon! You could send me a DM in Discord and we can try to sort it out if you want!

So this mod is ready to use? Just put those two files in the mods folder and we'll get your type and move changes?

That didn't work for me, sadly.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll wait for the refactor to be complete then.

Is there any update to this? I've read the introduction and it sounds really good so I'd love to try this out. Just out of curiosity, where exactly does the game get the data for the pokemon in EP19 if it's not the montext file?
