[SOLVED] Game no longer opens any save files

Hi!

 

Since two hours ago, I can no longer open E19 Beta - it just crashes.

I get this error message:

This happens with all my save files. All of them.

From at least three different playthroughs.

It does not matter which one I rename...

I tried this with the current version (19.03) as well as 19.01, and neither works.

The weird thing is, it works with E18.4...????????

So I'm unsure whether my save file is really corrupted or whether something else is happening...

Please help me! :(

 

EDIT: A clean install of E19 Beta on a different computer solved the issue with all save files. The save files are all okay. (OH MY GOD AM I GLAD I REALLY THOUGHT I HAD PERMANENTLY LOST 210 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY!!!!)

But it does not work on my laptop.

I repeat: A clean install on my PC works just fine with the save files, but a clean install on my laptop doesn't.

...???????

I have no idea what is happening... does someone have an idea how to fix this?

 

EDIT2: OOOOOOOOOKAY, I solved it!
By process of elimination, the only thing that could have caused the problem was the game.dat file, since that was the only thing that remained untouched. (The savegames were obviously okay, as was the clean copy of the game, and it was something that only affected the E19 Beta version - so it had to be that thing.)

By the way, I have no idea what that thing does, but deleting it solved the issue. It also magically reappeared in my folder - this time uncorrupted, probably.

It's a file in your save games folder that just pops up whenever you install E19 on a computer. It's probably good for something, but it seems to be one of these files that just create themselves again if they're missing from the folder.
