Tirtouga/Archen puzzle

So I've been looking for a way to complete the Agate Circus puzzles for both Tirtouga and Archen but Shift doesn't work anymore? That or I don't know how to do the puzzle. I also have Full IV password activated so I probably won't be able to trade for it either :(

 

edit: that being said, if necessary I can probably start a new save file and move the traded mon into the shared box.

It's just bound to whatever your quick Key Item button is (so Shift by default, but whatever you changed it to; I have mine on C). I guess it's a little unfortunate that the game dialogue specifies it as Shift, but oh well.
