Poke-people: Chapter 2: Your first Exam

You walk into your first period class today. The teacher taps the board, catching everyone's attention.

"Your Exams are this Friday! You will be tested on physical ability, performance in magic, knowledge on linking, and you will have to battle another one of your fellow students. Dont worry if you win or lose, since the test is set up so all may pass or none may pass regardless of the battle results. They will influence your base ranking once you graduate, however."

What will you do? Today is Wednesday. Are you going to study, train, or practice?

OOC: All of your pokemon's levels are 10 higher than when you left off in the previous chapter. You can also master up to 4 spells. (ex: Demon shapeshifting (illusion), fire barrier (offense), gale blades (offense), and invisibility (illusion) You also have to rate your character's skills in accuracy since this term's main focus was accuracy. (1-5, 1 being terrible and 5 being perfect, and this cannot be changed until later.)

Jake thought it over and decided it was time he had practiced magic much harder. He needed it anyways. He had never really been very good at magic, for he had never really understood the focusing concept of it. So he had then decided the right thing to do was to take up magic and begin working on it much harder than usual.

Over the last few months, Sarcus had been working hard. The academy was definitely different from his school back in Hoenn. He hadn't really had to try there, mostly coasting by on his excellent (but not always dependable) memory. The teenager was determined to prove to Emerald that he wasn't as weak as she thought he was when she had come upon him that first day. Gallant was getting over his nervousness, and starting to live up to his name. A bit too much, actually, as he often got aggressive toward people he thought were threatening his trainer. Perhaps he was returning the favor? Sarcus continued to develop his skills and those of his partners, sparring with them personally as well as battling other Trainers and wild Pokemon.

Excellent, he thought. I'll finally be able to truly work together with my partners. And, I'll be able to prove my power. I wonder if we'll be battling one another along with having our Pokemon battle? If so, I should have an advantage. One major part of his training had been coordinating attacks using psychic powers. It had been difficult, with his team consisting of mostly Dark and Steel types, but with enough convincing and work together, he had managed to overcome the barriers to communication. He turned to look at his classmates. I wonder if I'll end up battling someone I know? Jake seemed rather concerned. Shouldn't be hard to beat him. He chuckled to himself. Don't be an ass, he scolded himself after the thought.

Grace jumped at the word "exam". I'd better start thinking about my fourth pokemon. Everyone I know has four pokemon, my magic is good enough, and my accuracy...is probably never going to get that good. I wonder who Im going to face off against? Jake? Sarcus? Orpha? Once again, Alina had given them extra time at the end of the period, so Grace tore out a piece of paper from her notebook and scratched out a table. She was currently only weak to steel, ground, and fire, had no supereffective moves on electric, steel, and fire. Fire and steel huh? A poliwrath or swampert would work, but then I'd have to worry about grass types. She walked up to Alina. "How do the battle portions of the exams work?

"You'll hear this from Emerald later, but you, and all your pokemon are going to fight against another student and their pokemon. The test runs on a point basis, 100 points per portion. There's a 25 question written test on linking, you'll be asked to throw knives, show your magic teacher how good you are at that category of magic, and battle. You need a minimum of 375 points to pass." replied Alina

Jake noticed Sarcus to his side and turned to greet him happily but saw he was chuckling. He felt slightly embaressed but he didn't even know exactly what he was laughing about. He expelled it from his mind and imagined how his parents and brother were doing. He was the only poke person in his family because his genetic father was a poke person but his mother divorced him meaning his brother was completely different from him. They were on vacation back in mossdeep, Jake's hometown. Jake had practiced magic a lot since the 7 months had been in place up to this moment. He had mastered offensive skills, mostly aura attacks and his healing was terrible which he wasn't proud of. But he was good at aura attacks. He slashed and blasted about on days he practiced, hitting a dummy who was now rotting in his backyard slashed to bits and missing an entire arm from a blast. Jake took his pokemon to class, houndour was especially energetic for some reason and seemed just a bit stronger than his other pokemon for some reason. Jake couldn't figure why though. So he continued down the hall leaving behind the chuckling Sarcus to get to first period as fast as possible.

Sarcus raised his hand. "How will our opponents be determined? I wouldn't want my team up against someone with all sorts of Bug types, for example." He thought his team had enough coverage against the things, but he was still concerned. He shifted in his seat slightly. The metal braces he had obtained for training with his Pokemon and building his strength were strong and practical, but got uncomfortable after a while. Sarcus tried to keep them on as much as possible to build up the muscle in his arms. Surely, the physical power of a poke-person carried over when they were transformed.

(( youre an hour behind us all. in fact, youre not even to the point of the first post.))

Alina replied, "your opponent will be randomly chosen from the list of students with the same schedule as you."

(( excuse my short posts and spelling/punctuation mistakes until i get my computer back.))

Jake heard Alina say opponents and immediately sighed and put his head on his desk. He didn't really want to fight very badly but it had to be done anyways...

He awaited the utter doom of having to battle somebody and just grabbed his favorite book and began to read

"20,000 leagues under the sea"

By Jules Vern

As he read through his favorite book he imagined how captain Nemo's childhood could've been like. He was a genius after all.

He closed up his book on page 5 remembering the fact that this was Alina that was the teacher here. The only person he feared besides Emerald. She had outsmarted him, a great feat. He put the book down and payed very close attention to what she was saying.

Sarcus grunted. "Alright then." He noticed Jake momentarily pulling out a book and reading it. He tapped on his desk. "You should read the Wheel of Time series sometime." He returned his attention to Alina, though she didn't get much. He was trying to work out what they needed to drill on today during their free time. Gallant needs to work on defending himself in close combat. . . He was quickly lost in thought.

As Jake returned his attention to Alina too, he thought about those wheel of time books. Sounded like a epic adventure type thing. He hoped he would be paired with anyone to battle but Grace. That flabebe would be his death, like a rainbow apocalypse... He hadn't been paying much attention since he'd been reading though and hoped to god his karma wouldn't get him paired to Grace and that evil demon, disguising itself as flabebe... Being a flower didn't trick Jake, that fairy was evil.

Grace scribbled notes as fast as she could. She was not particularly good at abbreviations or narrowing down notes to just the main idea, but she was god at remembering every little detail in lectures, so much that she often didnt need notes. Today's lecture was even more fast paced than usual, Alina liked to speed through lectures and give the students lots of extra time, a trait that Grace appreciated. After all, it was her only chance to work on stuff until her free period before magic. And during that time, it was often devoted to mastering the spell so she could show off in class later. Emerald was right. She was good at magic.

Jake quickly wrote down notes rather annoyed by the idea of Alina's quick speaking and giving everyone extra time, it was hard to keep up at times and left students with nothing to do but either play with pokemon or read. Jake had the urge to make trouble with the spirit bind he'd practiced but then Alina would just give him more things to do like more janitor duty or something. So he just wrote down more notes, magic... Just wasn't his main interest. He didn't know what he wanted to do, he hated fights, didn't like taking tons of notes, but liked making trouble despite all that. He definently was good at making trouble, but he knew it was wrong anyways. And mood swings only made it worse. Although he was unsure of what he desired to do at the time magic was still pretty cool despite not liking it a whole lot. So he just excepted the fact that however he thought of it,

Magic was awesome. He continued taking notes from the speech of the vigorously speaking Alina as fast as he could.

As soon as Alina finished talking, Grace pulled out a map of the forest. She was sure that there were mudkip somewhere near where she found Dratini, so she planned out the longest possible route that would take her there and back. The longer the route meant more and more training for her pokemon, and more chances to coordinate with them better. After all, this battle would be more like a battle royale instead of a fair 1v1 match. She also wanted a chance to practice her Thunder Storm spell, which definitely needed better control over where it went and how big it got. Bigger "storms" meant more energy used, and it wouldnt be useful if she caught her own pokemon in friendly fire.

As soon as Alina stopped talking, he turned to Gallant. He focused intently on the Pokemon. They couldn't physically practice in the classroom, but both of them had psychic abilities. With Gallant's assistance, they created a mental image of themselves. Alright, we're going to practice your close combat. Get your guard up; you're leaving yourself open here- and here- and here. Left, left, up, hook, down, center, up, right, down, right . . . The two began sparring mentally, focusing intensely.

Grace tore out of the room as soon as the bell rang. She wanted to avoid the rush of people as well as practice throwing knives again; she was getting better at it again. I need all the practice I can get, who knows what Ill be like on a battlefield? She quickly dressed out and headed into the gym.

(hurrr, short post.)

Sarcus stood up slowly, still focusing on his mental sparring with Gallant. He made his way down to the gym. Perhaps this lack of focus had been what was holding his accuracy back. . . It didn't matter. He had better ways to defend himself at range. He noted Grace heading into the gym with him, but didn't call out to her. If she wants to talk, fine. If not, I'm not interrupting my training.

"Next up, Grace!" Ryan shouted. He handed her six knives, and there were six targets strapped on the trees. They were training outside today, and Ryan expected them to hit all six without moving both feet.

He never said we couldnt flip in midair, Grace thought. And that's how I'll hit them all. She kept one foot off the ground, flung three, leapt with the other foot, twisted around, then flung the other three knives. Score. Though she didnt hit any bull's eyes, she hit all six targets, a feat no student had done yet. So far, there was only one student who hit a bull's eye, but he missed three other targets completely. Moving targets were easy for her, as she had experience with them before. And thanks to private training with her dad, she was able to throw multiple knives at once and hit multiple targets. But there was one problem. All six knives were barely scraping the edges of the targets. Targets are round. Humans are not. It those were her enemies on a battlefield, she would have barely nicked or scraped them. Another piece of advice her dad gave her was to try to avoid the bull's eye. Hitting an enemy in the stomach has a much smaller chance of killing the enemy than hitting them in the neck or chest.

Jake listened to his social studies teacher lecture about events occurring shortly after the creation of the crystal amulet, while listening Jake drifted to the thoughts of what his Deino would be like after it reached full potential... Would it be obedient and friendly or would it get worse as it aged? He could only hope and discipline it so it would behave... When he returned to listening to the lecture he found that things were quite brutal during the time period.

Sarcus's eyes widened slightly at Grace's performance. Impressive. He didn't posses nearly enough acrobatic skill to pull something like that off; let alone the required accuracy to actually hit his targets while doing so. After a few people went, it was his turn. He quickly threw all of his knives in rapid succession. Each flew to their designated target except for one, which fell short. He grunted in dissatisfaction when he saw where the kunai had hit, though. The blades had landed on the outer edges of his targets, instead of close to the bullseye. He sat down, sighing with a degree of frustration.

Jake eventually got pretty bored of the history lecture and lied back in his chair taking notes slower and slower as he went in boredom. He squinted his eyes and continued taking notes while slouching eventually awaiting lunchtime as his belly grumbled angrily at him, his pokemon the same, scratching their stomachs at the growls awaiting food.

Sarcus, after P.E. had ended, retrieved his books from where they had been resting. He looked around for Grace, wondering how she had been doing. Over the last couple months, he had been rather distracted. Training was starting to take up a large portion of his time; a stark contrast to how he had been using his time at home. He continually felt the need to make his team just a little bit stronger, a bit faster, more coordinated.

Jake continued taking notes up to the bell for 3rd period. He found himself constantly toiling over some memory he couldn't remember that was apparently, whatever it was, something of dire importance. No matter what he did he couldn't remember so he reached out for Deino, who had been attempting to eat a lock as he was going to gym, and placed him to his chest tightly. He believed his pokemon and himself needed maybe needed a bit more... Discipline, direction, and role model of leadership before the only good remaining in them was spoiled into bad doing. He continued to gym class.

((Youre a period ahead of us))

Grace's head nodded in the overly boring history lesson. Do we really NEED to know this stuff? True, learning about Emerald's mistakes, the war, and what it was like before the war might be useful someday, but I dont see any immediate need for it. Good thing next year we get an elective instead of history. She pulled out a notepad and began sketching out possible battle plans including a mudkip.

Sarcus focused intently on the history lesson for a few reasons. One, they were focusing on detailed military history right now, and tactics was one of his interests. Two, Draco was, as his name suggested, a trainer of Dragon-types, and he wanted to talk to him about obtaining and training Dragon-type Pokemon. He didn't write notes, though. He glanced over at Grace. Are you up for a battle, later? Gallant needs some practice. He sent the message telepathically.

At gym Jake once again got hyped to get to throw knives again, he was second in line luckily this time! The person in front had thrown crazily as he expected, missing badly. Jake stepped up, grabbed the six kunai on the table and decided to have some fun. He quickly tossed a single knife across his chest, then twirled into another across the chest toss, then turned right and threw overhand, spun again and tossed underhand, the rolled into a diagonal across the chest, then stood up and tossed a left diagonal chest, and then ended off with a right diagonal chest throw. And he exclaimed proudly as he had gotten a bullseye on each target. He sat down and awaited someone to compare to his skill with the knives.
