"Ah, well. Keep your head down and pay attention, I guess." Max turned down the hall and gestured to Jake. "Well, Emerald doesn't seem to be someone who appreciates people being late. Let's get going."

He made his way through the school and walked into the classroom, picking a seat next to where Jake typically sat, and waited patiently for class to begin.

Sarcus also made his way to his magic class for the day. To get practice and to test himself, he sought out Alina mentally and tried to determine what today's lesson was going to be.

Jake sat down in his usual seat and looked about normally in a lazed fashion and he jumped slightly once he sought to his left to find non other than Max.

((I sit in the bottom right corner of the room))

"Well... That was unexpected... Nice to see you here Max!"

He cocked his head towards the front of the room in slowest possible way as if it were a horror movie.

He whispered gently

"Just checking to make sure Ms.minotaur hasn't been watching me... I don't need you getting caught up in... Her trouble net anytime today..."

He looked towards the front of the room but was secretly looking down towards his desk at his binder that held his favorite book, "20,000 leagues under the sea hidden amongst the binders covered area. He finished the page and quickly closed it returning his attention to Emerald.

Emerald's eyes flicked an annoyed glance at Jake, but she sighed and let it drop. "Is there anyone who didnt get to go yesterday? Jake, I know for a fact that you didnt go yesterday."

~

Grace yawned during the offensive magic class. They were doing the same old routine as they always did, short lesson, practice at the field, then Shimmer would go and critique everyone. She was one of the few that had already mastered the four spells they picked to focus on at the beginning of the year.

Max raised his hand. "I didn't." He started to stand, expecting Emerald to direct him somewhere.

----------------

Psychic class ran fairly similarly to offensive class. They practiced various techniques. Sarcus primarily focused on assaulting and breaking the mental defenses of his opponents as quickly as possible, along with using his power to enhance his natural speed and strength, which were somewhat lacking.

Tsk. That slacker. "Jake, youre up next, after Max. She brought another injured pokemon up to the front of the class.

(psst, its a farfetch'd with a broken wing ;))

Max stood up and walked from his seat to the front of the classroom where Emerald had brought a Farfetch'd that needed healing. He examined it for a moment, and quickly ascertained the issue; it had a broken wing. "Hey, bud, you'll be fine in a second," he murmured reassuringly to it as he focused himself. Attempting to shunt out distractions for a moment, he spread his hands over the affected area. A look of intense focus came over his face, and the Pokemon's wing seemed to put itself back together. He let out a breath that he hadn't quite realized he was holding. "How's that?"

After she let the Farfetch'd flutter around a bit, Emerald wasted no time getting calling for another pokemon from the infirmary. "Jake, youre up next! And I'd better not catch you talking during class again," she snapped.

(Youve got a swirlix with a bad cut ;))

"Wow!"

He held up his hands like she was holding him up.

"Gotcha ms! Now what've we got?!... Here..."

Upon seeing the swirlix a bead of sweat fell down his face and his eyes closed slightly.

"Oh, a swirlix... And a bad cut..."

He turned to the class with a big ol' happy smirk and dreamy looking eyes.

"If there's anything that we know, means you too ms. Emerald, it's that I'm a complete idiot."

Part of the class laughed.

"ESPECIALLY when it comes to healing! I mean look at me! When I heal! I look like I'm trying to push a boulder around! Am I right?

I mean, I have this super red face, sweating, and these pokemon are just like, what IS wrong with you!? You ok? Should I call Grace to come heal you too?"

"We gonna have a healing train down here folks!"

The class was already laughing before he'd finished the joke

When he turned back to the swirlix he couldn't help but hide a smile, it was laughing and it seemed like it was much better.

"You like that little guy? Here, lemme patch you up real quick"

Upon feeling Jake's touch it became skittish, it saw Jake's pokemon staring at the swirlix and it knew exactly what kind of pokemon Jake trained. It didn't make it much happier.

"Ok, here we go... Since I am gonna go down in the history book for town's worst healer, I might as well fix you up my way..."

He looked at the cut closely...

"Emerald! What caused this cut? And where was this cut received? Vital information..."

//Grace isnt in the same room as you ATM.//

"I believe YOU should be the one trying to get all that information? But since you obviously havent been paying attention at all lately, you probably wouldnt even be able to get the info you need!" Emerald shouted, her cool clearly blown. "Now, if I gave the info you need, would you be able to pass this test? At this rate, youre obviously not going to pass the healing test in the exams. You'd better hope your skills in other classes are good enough to let you pass this year.

His eyes flashed a playful retaliation

"Well, you've hurt me Em... I may not be able to heal as well as people like you... But I can't just know something like location by staring at wounds... Now if you'd excuse me! I'll just figure this out myself! Watch! And learn!"

He called up his Sneasel and told it to make a ice magnifying glass for him to use.

"This will do! Thank you Whisper!

Hmmm..."

He inspected the wounds deeper areas...

"Infected wound, uh oh..."

He pulled some AloeVera plant from his binder

"I keep all this just in case... This should suck the infection right out..."

Pus began to ooze from the wound and Jake quickly grabbed a balm mushroom.

He squeezed the mushroom lightly and it extracted some of its penicillium.

"This will burn a little..."

He took the pokemon's hand to comfort it and poured the disinfectant very slowly onto the wound.

The pus began to dissolve away and the wound was clean.

"Now for some bandaging..."

He carefully wrapped the bandaging around the pokemon and made 4 tight layers around the wound.

"You should heal up fine in a couple days... After all, why rush healing with magic, which can be painful, instead of a slow relaxing natural heal up?..."

He patted the pokemon's head and smiled.

"Emerald! This case is busted!"

Max winced at Jake's antics. Please don't keep her attention when you come back here. . . He already wasn't the greatest student, and an upset Emerald focused on the person sitting next to him wouldn't help. He listened to Emerald's harsh commentary as Jake bandaged the wounded Pokemon. That doesn't seem to be the best way to teach people. I wonder what has her panties in a knot? Max leaned back in his seat, closing his eyes for a moment. I'll have to check it out eventually, but there's no use thinking about it right now. He didn't pay a lot of attention past that point; he had already taken his turn healing, and he was rather tired. . .

----------------------------------------

Psychic class was rather uneventful. Sarcus didn't participate in many drills or practices, mostly because he was trying to rein in his irritation about how the day had been progressing. Of course I get detention because of that idiot. OF COURSE. Nevermind that I was just minding my own business before he showed up, or that Metang was acting on xyr own. He tightened his mental restraint after a sharp look from the instructor let him know that some stray thoughts were leaking outward. When the bell rang, he swiftly walked to detention, his mood showing through in his aggressive stride.

(Extremely serious mood swing)

So... Emerald... Would you have anything to say other than insults? It'd be nice to hear that what I just did wasn't in vain... And what're you staring at Max for? He didn't do anything wrong... Shouldn't you be more focused on insulting my methods instead like you always do instead of accepting them and maybe actually considering giving me credit for it instead of continuing to bomb me with every negative word in the dictionary?

I am one of the most intelligent stundents in this class, no doubt, but your methods of teaching using punishment over just accepting things for what they are, are making me wish I just wasn't here. But isn't that just what you want Emerald? You just hate me so much you make me unable to heal anything because every single time I try I think of (points at her) YOU!

Every time I try to heal something the "way" you want me too I get mad because I end up thinking of you, and then because I'm angry I CAN'T heal anything... But as soon as I try to impress you, I try your way but you won't stop freaking insulting me! So guess what, I have to ignore you just to be able to do anything at all! My way or not!

(Calming down and quieting voice)

Sorry for the outburst... I just... Need some time to think..."

He turned towards Max who was now giving him a look, now he knew the real reason Jake couldn't heal anything, and so did the whole class too.

((Grass said to take over for a bit.))

Emerald's eyes flashed as she gave Jake a thunderous look, a look that promised swift retribution. Rather than peeling his hide off with a tongue-lashing, however, she simply stared Jake down, and made two simple statements, an icy calm in her voice. "Detention. Until I say you don't have it," she preempted. She then made two sharp gestures as she sat back down, one dismissing Jake from the classroom, the other calling the next student up. The poor student caught some of Emerald's fury, and nearly knocked herself out as she skittered up to the front to heal the next Pokemon.

----------------------------

Max awoke with a start. "Shit," he cursed before he caught himself. Luckily, no one caught his slip, as the class was too busy trying to simultaneously ignore and pay rapt attention to what was happening in front of them. "Oh, come on, dude. . ." he muttered when he discerned what was happening. "You need to stop doing that to trigger-happy teachers like that."

"Detention! This'll be fun!"

He walked away from Emerald's desk ignoring the kid next to him fall, he swiftly twirled a pencil around his fingers as he walked away and then quickly shoved it deep into his pockets with a well aimed jab.

"Show Emerald what you're made of up there kid! Word from Jake!"

He gave him the double finger point gesture and then lifted his hands away and put them down to his sides.

"Don't you go disappointing me."

The boy caught a flash in Jake's eyes of playful happiness as he walked away.

"Max, try not to slip up on words so much. Cya"

Jake walked out of the class as if nothing had happened, his pokemon praising him and patting him on the back for standing up to Emerald.

------------------------------------------------------------------

As Jake approached the attention room he looked inside through the glass and saw a familiar back-of-the-head.

It was ol' Sarcus alright.

He stepped in and took a seat next to him and looked forward.

After class ended, Max stood up and walked out of the room, since he hadn't taken his things with him to the class. Nearly immediately after leaving the room, someone walked straight into him, sending both of them stumbling. The offending student walked off as soon as he regained his balance, but not before turning and offering an earnest - if hurried - apology. While he didn't seem to notice who Max was due to his hurried retreat, Max was startled to realize that it was none other than Sarcus, heading to the same place he was. Max stood for a moment, shrugged, then walked after him leisurely, his path cleared in the other Trainer's wake. Both of them arrived in the detention room after a short time, Max taking a spot near the middle, and Sarcus sitting in a far corner.

After seeing the three young men enter the room, Sonny whistled. Rayleigh walked into the detention room and closed the door behind him as Sonny disabled his invisibility spell, revealing him to be sitting at the teacher's desk in the detention room with his feet up on the desk. "So, Sarcus, Max, and Jake. Do you all know why you're here?"

At the question, Sarcus looked up, a defiant expression on his face. He stared straight into Sonny's eyes. "No. I don't. I've done nothing worthy of being sent here." His Absol, kept out of his ball as usual, pawed at him as if to caution him. Sarcus glanced down at the touch and gave a short, crisp shake of his head, then returned his glare to Sonny. His Gallade was overly alert as usual, glancing about this way and that, while Blues and Chomp were dozing, slumped next to each other, the Pawniard's blades not seeming to bother the Gible's tough hide.

"Not really," Max started at the exact moment Sarcus did. He gave him a quick look, then returned his attention to Sonny as Sarcus spoke, leaning back in his chair. May as well relax. He idly stroked Tiberius, who looked a bit lonely without the others beside him. The Arcanine was a bit perturbed that no one was paying attention to him, and he let out a small yip.

"I've only stood up to somebody that needed to learn a thing or two, is it so bad that I only defend my dignity? No, her rudeness doesn't seem to solve anything. So I stood up for my beliefs and I gave her the stare down. She's just anger-trigger-happy.

You know who I'm talking about don't you?"

His pokemon smiled and nodded amongst themselves as Jake spoke. They looked about proudly feeling that they too stood up to Emerald's tyranny by assisting Jake in his rant against her.

Sonny sighed and shook his head, then swung his legs off the table and stood up. "Evidently, the only one of you here who has any hope of not being in detention for the next three months is Max. You're all in here because you need to learn to control yourselves. If you can't even keep yourself in check, how are you supposed to keep your Pokemon behaving. And yes, I'm looking at you, Sarcus," Sonny said, annoyed. "Your defiant attitudes will get you nowhere, so I suggest you sit there and listen to me speak until I say you can open your mouths. Clear? Good." Rayleigh stood in the corner of the room, haughtily looking at the students. "Jake, I'm not sure what Emerald wants me to do with you, so today you'll get a special duty. Sarcus, Max, you two need to work out your differences. It's all well and good to have a rival, but when it gets in the way of others' education it is no longer a rivalry, it is a problem." Sonny walked toward the door and opened it, stepping into the hallway. "Follow me. We're going to the practice arena."

Jake raised his head angrily and opened his

Mouth so quickly and determinedly it was as if he were going to fire a laser from his mouth, he was going to further justify his reason to Emerald's useless detention by explaining to Sonny she was insulting him while he worked and then threw him into detention, however... He quickly drew back a tight fist and closed his mouth. He put his arm down to his side, cooled down and turned away, lowered his gaze, closed his eyes, and shook his head as if in disagreement. He turned back to the group and followed them to the arena.

His pokemon stared down, silenced with anger from being shut-up and unable to help Jake tell the real story.

Sarcus opened his mouth, as if to offer a retort, but he bit down on it as he swallowed his pride, resulting in his reply becoming nothing more than an irritated grunt. He stood from his seat stiffly and gave a sharp wave to his team to signal them forward as he moved in the same direction. Absolution prodded the two dozing Pokemon awake, and they stumbled forward a bit before following. Interfering with my- what? How on Earth was that interfering with my education?

Max sighed and got up, walking after Sonny. Tiberius looked intently at the Sawsbuck, sizing it up, then walked after his Trainer, still not-so-subtly trying to get someone to pay attention to him. What does he mean by "interfering with my education?" Does he think I bombed that one test because of him. . . ?

Sonny opened the door to the practice room, ushering the students inside before closing the door. He then walked in front of them and smiled, spreading his arms. "Welcome to detention. This is how we are going to determine when you fellows are ready to stop coming to detention. Rayleigh, if you would?" The Sawsbuck pressed his snout to a button on a control panel near the practice field. This caused the field to widen, taking up nearly the entirety of the gymnasium. "Sarcus and Max, you two will be battling against me as a team. If you lose, you get to come back tomorrow and spend another afternoon with me. Because most of the Pokemon I have with me are much stronger than yours, I'll be using some that I haven't brought out in a bit. Rayleigh, return." The Scout pulled out a Friend Ball, using it to bring Rayleigh back to him. He went over to a PC and put that ball and a Quick Ball on the transporter, receiving in exchange a Heavy Ball and a Fast Ball. "Jake, you'll be acting as the referee. The battle will be a 4-on-4 double battle. Each of you can use two Pokemon. I'll let you get to strategizing." Sonny then walked to the left, taking his position at the end of the practice field.

Well. This was unexpected. Sarcus hadn't been sure what Sonny was up to when he led them in here, but this wasn't it. He turned to Max, and reached out telepathically with the assistance of Metang. I guess we've got to work together. Max jumped slightly when Sarcus sent his message, but quickly recovered once he realized what was happening.

You can hear me, right?

Of course; I'm the one maintaining the link.

We are helping, Metang interjected.

Yes, yes, everyone knows that.

I didn't.

Well now you do. Anyway, let's get to strategy. I've got offensive powerhouses for all of my partners, though Chomp isn't strong enough to battle, and Blues is still rather weak. Metang is more bulky, while Absolution relies on his sheer attacking strength and accuracy to win. I'm also not sure if I trust Gallant to behave, though his Close Combat will tear through Sonny's team given the chance.

I like the idea of your Gallade fighting. Who else were you gonna use? Sensing that Sarcus was prepared to drop his hostile feelings, temporarily at least, he gradually did the same. Metang creeps me out, he accidentally sent through the link, however.

What's your problem with Metang? Seriously, what the hell? He took a threatening step toward the dark-haired Trainer.

Don't get your briefs in a bunch, I didn't mean anything.

I don't wear - nevermind. Speaking of xem, though, I was planning on using Metang for this battle because of xyr Steel typing.

What about Bite?

Good point. Absolution might be a good choice; he's got a pretty versatile moveset. Gallant and Absolution, sound OK?

Sure, why not. I've got a mix of Pokemon on my team. Argentia might help fill the gap left by your team defensively, because of her high defense. Tiberius is also good at taking hits.

Ah, you have an Aron? My dad has an Aggron . . . Sarcus trailed off, remembering who he was "speaking" to. That sounds good. We all set?

I think so.

Both teens turned to face Sonny. Max tossed out the ball containing his Aron, who looked about, slightly confused, before realizing the situation. Sarcus returned Chomp, Blues, and Metang to their balls, and waved Gallant forward. The Fighting-type looked a bit fuddled about his battling partner, but his trainer made a placating gesture, and Gallant moved his focus back to the impending battle. "We're ready," Sarcus called.

(Battle theme for this particular instance:)
