Sutoratosu
well... I've been trying to learn a thing or two about comp battling, and I read the intro for begginers at the smogon university... and I realized... I was only using Pokemon I had a preference for, pretty much ignoring strategy when making teams. and so I nipped that issue in the bud right away, and have begun concocting a few... things for battle... let us begin: Ninjask (M) @ Focus Band Trait: Speed Boost EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spd Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk) - Substitute - Toxic - Swagger - Sand Attack Whimsicott (F) @ Leftovers Trait: Prankster EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spd Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk) - Substitute - Leech Seed - Cotton Guard - Grass Whistle Aegislash (M) @ Leftovers Trait: Stance Change EVs: 80 HP / 252 Def / 176 SDef Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk) - Swords Dance - Power Trick - Sacred Sword - Substitute Salamence (F) @ Life Orb Trait: Intimidate EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - Dragon Dance - Dragon Claw - Earthquake - Fire Fang Gardevoir (F) @ Life Orb Trait: Trace EVs: 252 SAtk / 128 SDef / 128 Spd Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Psychic - Shadow Ball - Moonblast - Reflect Empoleon (M) @ Life Orb Trait: Defiant EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Scald - Ice Beam - Flash Cannon - Iron Defense Well, guess explainations are in order... Ninjask and Whimiscott are meant to serve as high speed stallers/ plain nuisances in battle. Ninjask's speed allows for it to outspeed everything, setting up a substitue the first turn, then following up with sand attack or swagger, or toxic, if that's more your cup of tea. I've used it, and this thing can take out an entire team by itself in the right circumstances. Whimiscott can set up with a substitute first move and then use leech seed/ grass whistle to either get the enemy health steadily lowered or put them to sleep and pretty much make em helpless, Cotton guard can turn this thing into a virtual tank. now as for aegislash... I heard alot about this mystic sword... easpecialy it's ability... so I thought I'd try it for myself... what I eventually came up with is this concept: "Ragnorak complex" pretty much, one uses power swap inorder to switch this things attack and defense stats with one another, turning it into a major threat when coupled with iron defense, which I don't have on it for some reason... anyways, yeah... tried it... and it just aint fast enough to pull it off... any solutions to this? moving on salamence is meant to serve as a physical sweeper. gardevoir is supposed to add on a Spec.attack Ace to the team and as for empoleon, it's there to give an actually relatively stable option in battle. though now that I think about it, I'd like a swampert better... any pointers. (I have to give credit to DobbyTheElf for the idea about using whimiscott like this in battle, as he is where I got the concept of high speed stalling from, which in turn inspired my creation of staller ninjask.) Guest
Whimsicott (F) @ Leftovers Trait: Prankster EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spd Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk) - Substitute - Leech Seed - Cotton Guard - Grass Whistle If I remember correctly, GrassWhistle puts something to sleep, so, on Whimsicott, if you want that sleep kind of stuff, I'd do Spore, otherwise Toxic. Giga Drain over Cotton Guard, if anything, it needs to deal some sort of damage. Spread the EVs of Spd into Def/SDef, I think it kinda makes the Pokemon a little more bulkier, but that's just me personally. No Timid nature, find one that reduces attack but boosts Special Defence or Defence. Timid is not necessary on a Pokemon that uses Prankster. Ninjask (M) @ Focus Band Trait: Speed Boost EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spd Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk) - Substitute - Toxic - Swagger - Sand Attack Erm... What... If you want a something that uses Swagger, try this instead. Klefki (F) @ Leftovers Trait: Prankster EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 SDef Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk) - Substitute - Thunder Wave - Swagger - Foul Play People don't like it, but it works and that's all that matters at the end of the day, whether or not it works. You'll be outdone by Prankster if you keep Ninjask in your team. Even if Klefki doesn't cut it, use Sableye. Same thing really. Aegislash (M) @ Leftovers Trait: Stance Change EVs: 80 HP / 252 Def / 176 SDef Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk) - Swords Dance - Power Trick - Sacred Sword - Substitute Where are your Attack EVs? Give it Adamant with a decent chunk spread between Attack and HP, like this... Aegislash (M) @ Leftovers Trait: Stance Change EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - Swords Dance - King's Shield - Shadow Sneak - Sacred Sword That allows for you to have priority, Kings Shield lowers the Attack of the opponent by -2 if they hit you directly with a physical attack. Shadow Sneak is like, your STAB priority and Sacred Sword is there for reasons, mostly because it's the common set used, but if you'd like, you could use Iron Head. Salamence (F) @ Life Orb Trait: Intimidate EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - Dragon Dance - Dragon Claw - Earthquake - Fire Fang Salamence is okay, but I'm not sure if Moxie's still a thing on it or if it's banned or whatever. Gardevoir (F) @ Life Orb Trait: Trace EVs: 252 SAtk / 128 SDef / 128 Spd Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Psychic - Shadow Ball - Moonblast - Reflect No, just, no. I'm sorry, I see what you're trying to do, it may work, but it most likely won't. You wouldn't want Moonblast there unless it's the Fairy type, and for this reason I present you with this set. Gardevoir (F) @ Gardevoirite Trait: Trace EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk) - Hyper Voice - Psychic - Shadow Ball - Thunderbolt With the megaevolution, you're allowed Pixilate, I'm almost certain, which boosts normal moves by 30% and transforms them into Fairy moves. Hyper Voice is powerful with these boosts, so you shouldn't have a problem with it. Otherwise, use Sylveon, it has the same effect in retrospect. Empoleon (M) @ Life OrbTrait: Defiant EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Scald - Ice Beam - Flash Cannon - Iron Defense You wouldn't be able to get off an Iron Defence in Gen 6 without being destroyed, which renders this set automatically invalid, unfortunately. You're better off trying Empoleon (M) @ Petaya BerryTrait: Torrent EVs: 252 Spe/ 4 HP/ 252 SAtk Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Agility - Substitute - Surf - Ice Beam/Grass Knot I nicked this set off of Smogon, and for a good reason. To utilize Empoleon you need to do it properly, and this is one of the ways in order to do so. Sub/Agility, the faster you get, it means that you're closer to low HP but ALSO you gain Speed, so you always hide behind your Substitute when using Agility. Hopefully you get to 25% health without taking much damage and your Petaya Berry activates, which grants you a Special Attack bonus, then you hit hard with Empoleon's Surf and Ice Beam, or Grass Knot, whatever you prefer. Even if these changes are made, your team has a glaring Ground/Fire weakness, and when Klefki's gone, for instance if you choose to change, you're left with an Ice weakness with Salamence, as well as a Bug, Ghost and Dark weakness. In all honesty, a Greninja would run amok on this team and cause aboslute chaos in your lineup. All it needs is Surf/Dark Pulse/Ice Beam and U-Turn, which is the standard set nowadays. Concentrate on nerfing those weaknesses so the team becomes synergetically balanced before running it properly, so I suggest you try to find Pokemon that neutralize most of these weaknesses. Erm.. I think I did it right. Keep on building though, you're on the right path. Good luck out there. Edited June 1, 2014 by Guest
Sutoratosu
Alright, many thanks for the pointers, I'll put them into place and try them out, as well as try concocted a few more teams for my experiments Edit: put them in place, and this team's working like a charm. just fought three or four battles in a row and won them all. thanks, I'll keep working though Edited June 1, 2014 by Stratos
SJMistery
- on empoleon, the petaya set is too vulnerable to the overdose of priority of OU, and the set you put is useless. try a specially defensive defog set which is his best set actually. - GrassWhistle is too unreliable, and speed got nerfed this gen, and you only can sleep one oponent. try stun spore instead - REMOVE. THAT. HAX. ITEM. ON. NINJASK. Or better, just remove Ninjask entirely (nobody will be stupid enough to keep his pokemon against him after you reveal your gimmicky set, 2 steels/poisons switching perpetually will make you waste your PP uselesly, and will give dangerous mons like Empoleon, Heatran, Scolipede or even Tentacruel free time to recover with Leftovers) and replace him by Scolipede with a baton pass or sweeping set who is FAR better. - Gardevoir will never use Reflect well, nobodyy will use Shadow Sneak with his Aegislash to die of shadow ball afterwards. Better just attack with Moonblast or charge with Calm Mind if you're confident the demonic sword won't show up. Also consider Mega-envolve it. Then use Hyper Voice instead of Moonblast - This set of Aegi will never work. You get walled by basically every ghost in OU imao. Better just use the SD set with kings sheld, SD, Scred Sword/Iron Head and shadow sneak, or a mixed set.
