Saber12
Did someone say Winter Outfits? vsTrainer1.png trback001.png How can I make the images smoother? This is new. Its nice to see a clear concept. To make the images smoother I'd suggest you be very careful with the shading. I try to draw very little and if I have to draw a lot I try to stick with colors Ame already has in the images and shade in what I think needs shading the most. -one thing you could do is use Paint.net or Graphics Gale to delete the leftover white outlines around the vsTrainer sprite(though I prefer Paint.net for this job) -second keep the original image reference close to you at all times. It'll help give you some direction in what needs to be shaded. -three if you do draw do what Alaris said and draw at half the resolution. Its simple in Graphics Gale just go to All Frames/Resample to 50% and uncheck smooth then you can just focus on drawing the shapes. That's all I have so far but it's a start towards cleaning up any loose pixels. The only thing I might have done differently (if I had any spriting skills), is have the ponytail move slightly every second frame of running, or at the appropriate times when fishing. If that's too much, then these look great. I'll definitely take note of that and bring in Kuro's overworld sprite as well: Walk Run Bike Kuro beat me up. The whole time. I struggled with him a lot and I will still have to struggle in order to correct a few errors I couldn't fix right away. At least I animated his ponytail a little though even that could be better. But please let me know if you notice anything strange about him. I may have missed something in the process. Tell me what you think. I like how these summer outfits are being finished up right at the very end of summer. (Well, unless you're Sheep.) ...ONTO THE WINTER OUTFITS! /shot See this is why I didn't want to call them summer outfits. Now everyone'll be like "it's fall I don't need this." I could see so many places where outfits like these would be used like at Apophyl Academy, Azurine Island, maybe even Rhodochrine Jungle. Well at least aside from the sunny days. Apophyl Academy seems perfect if you ask me but I don't know. Lets call it SPORTS GEAR or something. Why not? The idea for winter outfits started to make sense after the icy terrain was revealed for episode 13. As of now, I have idea's but I'm also interested in what everyone else would like to see. Its coming to the end with only Vero and Lucia left. Hopefully I"ll finish them rather quickly. Enjoy Kuro's completeness! Comments and critiques are always welcome and so are questions! Saber12
if you want i could help recently i have come into spriting and i would like to help with these fanpacks Of course you can help! Anyone's welcome to post sprite work on this thread. I've just been constantly updating my work. We'll work something out in the future if it gets a bit disorganized but for now feel free. Two in one day I'm living large! Walk Run Bike Fishing She didn't give me any trouble so far. I could edit them more but because they're so small I have to be careful to not to put in too much detail on a low detailed sprite. So far she moves perfectly fine. I didn't get a chance to check her bicycle animation so that may have errors I could have caught. If anyone notices anything strange let me know. So far I like how she came but tell me what you think. Currently there's a fishing problem with all the sprites but I think we'll get the answer to the problem as soon as Ame responds. Last but not least there's Vero. I'll get to him as soon as I can. When I'm finished I still plan to update everything one last time before I stamp em as finished. Then I don't really know where to go from there. Winter sprites anyone? I don't know tell me what you what to see and maybe I'll test some things out. Until then enjoy playing with Lucia! Saber12
I feel so relieved and a little sad to say that all the sprite outfits have been completed. Say hello to Vero in overworld sprite form! Walk Run Bike Fishing He didn't give me much trouble either. Of course there are a few things I will need to change in the future. One thing to note is that pretty much every bike animation is the same with little to no added detail barring Kuro and Alice. I haven't looked at other sprite animations of this so I'll need to reference some in order to make the necessary changes. This is one of the many updates I will have to make in the future. For now I needed to change them enough so that they would at least look like the concepts I had in mind. Now its time to do more artistic work with the pixels. Now is the perfect time to let me know if something is strange about these sprites but its ok if it takes awhile for you to comment because I won't be able to update them as fast as I have been. I'm gonna need to find work and I'll have to go back to school before this break gets to me. I'm just glad I finished making these. I thought it would be better for people to have something to mess around with. I'll definitely be around checking the forums so please unleash all of your comments, questions and critiques so I won't miss something important as I work on the sprites. I really appreciate all of you for viewing or commenting my the sprite work and I'm glad to see others willing to learn how to make sprites and grow. If you want to help but feel uncomfortable about posting anything yet then send me a pm. I'll do my best to help out. Until then, enjoy the summer, sunny, sporty outfits for Reborn! Saber12
I wanted to at least think of a concept for winter sprites and I sort of had this idea for Alice. Looks like I'm trying new stuff here. I decided to try giving her a different pose and a more serious expression. I had a couple of coats to choose from as a reference and in the end I chose the longest one which I ended up drawing. If you prefer her usual more happy self or her original pose or both then I can make that change very easily so please tell me what you think. Any spriters willing to help out are welcome. Basically this is sort of where I want to start and if you can beat me to making the overworld sprites, transitions, or back sprites go right ahead and post it or show me in private if you'd like. I'd like to see you're take on this as well in case you can pull off making any details I can't. Sorry for not having any updates. If any of you were using Kuro's sport set you probably notice a problem with his ball throwing animation. I'm fixing it now and I'll send his fix in with the updates as soon as I can. The next sprite I'll bring in will be Lucia this time around. I've got a good idea for her already. Until then comments, critiques and questions are all weclome
Saber12
Ok I think I'll slow down with the updates. After seeing the overworld sprites in episode 13 it seems like I have a long ways to go before I get any better. These aren't the final updates but something I experimented with on the battle back sprites. They're all a little bit taller with an emphasis on more detail. By the way, I'm planning on increasing the height(where its needed) for any characters who team up with you as well in case things look a little strange. The good news is that Kuro is fixed for those of you who might have notice that cut in the animation. Sadly I haven't gotten to Lucia yet but I will very soon. I've noticed that by aiming too high for quality will have me chasing pixels for ages until I actually know what I'm doing. So for now I'm going to focus on getting the concepts out as quickly as possibly and I'll update the original sprites slowly instead of giving them a final update. That way I'll give myself a chance to develop a good workflow. Even though Lucia isn't here I do have this... I was thinking of other main characters who would wear some sort of sporty gear or maybe training gear and for what purpose. Basically Apophyll Academy is on an island with a volcano and a beach where students train their mind, body and spirit. Sounds to me like an ideal place to wear the gear and possibly introduce it although they're are so many ways to introduce it. Victoria seemed very likely to change into this type of gear for me. Being a fighting type user I referenced martial arts pants and slippers and of course kept her black belt. I'd still like to try other expressions with her and Blake also seemed like a character in need of sports gear since he's a student as well. I'll get to him eventually but I just wanted to provide another interesting alternative outfit to one of our friendly rivals. This time I really will get through the winter concepts as quickly as possibly. If I'm going to get good at anything, I may as well get good at design with art techniques in mind. Until then comments, critiques, and questions are always welcome.
Tringus
OOOOH!!!! If you're doing winter outfits, could you maybe give Vero a black trenchcoat? I wouldn't mind walking around wearing THAT for my story. The shades are optional, but at LEAST the trenchcoat.
Saber12
Ok its been a while since I updated this so lets take a look at Lucia for a moment. Edit: Can't have white backgrounds can we? How does the white winter coat suit her? Basically this is the outfit I'm aiming for although the pose I have in mind is taking awhile so now's a good time to talk about colors and the idea of having this type of winter outfit for her. I've been thinking about giving her boots a different color but for now I'll try to get the other pose together and let this give you guys an idea of what I'm aiming for. I can make changes now so let me know if anythings strange. OOOOH!!!! If you're doing winter outfits, could you maybe give Vero a black trenchcoat? I wouldn't mind walking around wearing THAT for my story. The shades are optional, but at LEAST the trenchcoat. Ok I want to give Vero a trench coat although I keep bumping heads with myself on this. For now I haven't seen a whole lot of different winter coats so I might just go with that since I like the look of trench coats anyway but I did have something slightly different prepared. I'll probably make the change to a trench coat in the end but when I reveal his outfit I may have two options for him. Oh and as for shades that shouldn't be a problem if you want those personally. I can make it an extra alt but unlike the wristband alt I didn't finish for the summer outfit I'll apply it to all the sprites. These would come along a little faster but I'm experimenting with a very different pose on Lucia as of now and I'm drawing the whole thing. I can't say how long it'll take but I might hold off and get Kuro and Vero up so you all can look at the concepts. Until then questions, comments, and critiques are all welcome. Edit: Not done yet. Today I need to try to make up for missed posts so here is Lucia with an alternate pose. I bet there are mistakes all over but for now I got it to a point where I actually like it. The hair was a bit scary but I think I nailed it.(me not being an expert on perspective). The boots can either stay this color or change I'm open to suggestions. I just really wanted to try a pose I saw and I got it. The main challenge was drawing the whole pose while referencing the original and the pose I was aiming for and ......................it was an amazing journey! Please tell me anything strange you notice so I can improve. I'm also looking to find other options for the buttons on her jacket if they could be better otherwise I'll settle for this. Once again I need to move and show so before I get bold again here's what I have at the moment for Vero! I was not aiming for a Looker resemblance in case that's what it looks like. I'm experimenting with jackets and for now the trench coat is a bit difficult for me to get but I'll set it up for him soon. As of now I don't have a new pose planned for him but I'll figure something out. If you like him this way let me know too so I can consider leaving the sprites as is. I still have Alice with her original pose and facial expression as well in case you're all interested. As of now I'll just keep moving along until I have everyone up. Until then questions, comments, and critiques are all welcome. Edited September 11, 2014 by Saber12
Sheep
These are looking great as concept art! As for the two different poses of Lucia, how much does that actually matter? It's not like you see that sprite much in game anyway.
Saber12
Without a second thought Kuro's up. He seems a bit simple but I guess that's the point of a concept anyways. So let me know if the coat's too short or his hood looks strange. Right now it looks fine to me but tomorrow I'll probably want to fix a few pixels here and there. Tell me what you think. These are looking great as concept art! As for the two different poses of Lucia, how much does that actually matter? It's not like you see that sprite much in game anyway. .....Good point. I think I might be trying something that's way unnecessary. I guess I'll finish making these poses exclusively for the winter outfits but in the future I don't think I'll continue with making different poses for alternate outfits. It has been eating up time that could be spent elsewhere. Well this set might take a bit longer though that depends on how I'm able to get through making all these. I'll try to get the alternate poses done but if it gets too difficult I'll just move on to the sprite animation and the rest of the sprites I need to replace. Also I will not forget that episode 13 introduced surf which means I have more overworld sprites to work on than last time including the summer sprites. I don't want to leave anything unfinished. Until then comments, critiques and questions are welcome.
Deleted User
For the Caucasian male Winter, I personally feel it'd be better to get rid of the pants side stripe. Looks good though.
Saber12
Alright I definitely needed to touch up Vero here. However, I find it easy to play around with expressions on his face. Help me decide which one looks best. Same old expression Slightly different pose. Angry Vero Cocky Vero Trevo's Vero At this point I like how he's come along. If you see anything strange let me know. Overall I had to thicken the shoulder length of the coat based on the reference I had and I did a little bit of clean up with the shading on the coat and buttons. I think it looks ok but I'm interested in what all of you think. For now I'll try to fix up a few things with Alice and Kuro, then I'll head to the next portion of the spriting process. Until then comments, critiques, and questions are welcome.
Sheep
I'd say the normal one is my favorite.
Saber12
I'd say the normal one is my favorite. I know sometimes the original is just the best. I'm just messing with emoticons. I've been slowing down a bit much lately. For now I've finished the alternate pose for Kuro and edited Alice since she was the dummy. Usual I guess? Serious Alice has been a little troublesome for me. I was trying keep from letting her body have too much of an egg shape if that makes sense. I know I'm no expert on perspective even with a reference but I had to at least try to fix her up. Tell me what you think of her. Same old Kuro Same Kuro no shades. Its kinda chilly anyway...*shivers* "Funny guy eh?" For the most part I was ok with the outfit overall. I didn't think of taking the shades off until Trevo suggested giving Vero shades so its a funny oddity I thought I'd try. I'm interested in you're thoughts too. I tried making alternate poses just to challenge myself however I think now it'd be better if I just got the sprites done with quickly at least for those of you interested in using these. I've already started working on the back sprite animations although I'm not sure if I should keep posting everything on this thread or if I could make a separate one for the winter sprites. I'll ask around first of course. Until then comments critiques and questions are welcome.
Nova
I've created a standard character sprite for my winter gear Alice. I've also made some tiny changes to the battle Transitions sprite. Would it be possible to have the Trainer sprites change automatically in-game? (For example, the sprite changes to winter gear when entering the Ametrine Mountain, into summer gear when it's sunny, etc.) That would be very cool, IMO. (For example, the sprite changes to winter gear when entering the Ametrine Mountain, into summer gear when it's sunny, etc.) That would be very cool, IMO. Well the transition sprite does look a bit better. For the profile sprite, I like how the shading and highlights were done for the boots but the body shape is a little too rectangular. Start by shaping her up a little more and you'll notice a big difference. Yeah its possible to implement that in the game. It just takes programming time. I thought about trying to implement it myself but I don't know ruby scripting well.... not yet at least. I wanted to get at least one new backsprite out so here's Alice! So far I like it. The next time I look at it I'll probably notice something strange but not everything. Tell me what you think. I'm going at a slow pace but I guess I can appreciate some progress rather than none. I'm still working on the summer sprites and I will get the surf animations done as soon as possible. I don't know who but one of the other the back sprites should make it up here soon. Until then comments, critiques and questions are welcome. Edited September 18, 2014 by Saber12
Saber12
I let too much stuff slow me down with making this one. Kuro's up. This was the idea I had so far even though I'm no expert on perspective this is the idea I had in mind for him. Not much was going to change since I'm still using the same color palette for him. I'll come back to this if I there's any details I could add. Let me know what you think. I'll have to try harder to get the others done soon. Right now I'm struggling with having confidence in my work but hopefully it'll blow over. I'll just try to get better slowly. Until then comments, critiques and questions are welcome. Sheep
Something about the way the hood sits looks wrong to me. I'm staring at it and all I'm seeing is a giant triangle.
Cornerman
Something about the way the hood sits looks wrong to me. I'm staring at it and all I'm seeing is a giant triangle. Because it looks like someone is holding up the hood at the left side There it should just fold over to the neck. P.s. Etesian
Agreed on Kuro's hood, although I'd also like to add that the light(?) on his left arm seems off to me. Also, about Alice, the third image's left arm looks "wider" than I think it should be.
Sheep
I think you're talking about her right arm.
Saber12
Thanks a lot for the critiques guys. Believe me it helps keep me focused on the bigger problems at hand and allows me to update things a bit faster. He's what an update to Kuro and Alice and also Vero's backsprite. For now I knew I had to shrink down the size of her arm. I'll touch her up still for the final draft but please feel free to tell me what you think. Ok I like this perspective better even though I'm still not quite sure it's correct. I understand now that I was trying to get a bigger hood on him that was used for winter coats. Since the original hood is so small I had a hard time imagining how it should look. I still feel that this might be my weakest showing of a back sprite or its the weakest of my work if that makes any sense. Its rough and although we could also call him a biker, he at least has a darker color palette for me to work with. I'll definitely update him in the future. I was hoping on bringing out Lucia too but for now I'll just keep up the pace. She'll get here soon enough. Until then comments, critiques and questions are welcome. Saber12
Thanks! I like how Vero is coming out too. Maybe with a few adjustments I can get his trainer sprite to match up better. I couldn't go through the day without finishing so here's Lucia! I'm not sure if she needs a hood or not. I kinda feel like it was add at the last minute. I guess I'll work with it for a little and if it gets in the way I'll just go back to my references and give her the collar instead. I'm drained so many errors elude as of now but if you find anything strange I'd be happy if you'd let me know. With all of them up I can at least start working on the transitions. I plan on going through a somewhat similar process as I did last time to ensure that these sprites get finished quickly. Until then comments, critiques, and questions are welcome.
