    andracass

    this is your captain speaking.

in this business, i don't especially like saying that i'm going to do things at some point down the line. there's always so much going on that things slip my mind, or life gets in the way, or something.

but there is one that that i said i would do a bunch of devblog posts ago.

i said i would tell you when beta has started.

    beta has started.

this is it. we're in serious business territory now. shit is actually real. this stupid game has been in development for 10 years and release is imminent.

it has been three and a half years since e18 was first released. that's a long fuckin time! there have been 5 new developers added to the team since then!

    i'm one of those developers!!

    that's weirding me out!!!

so this is a post about realistic expectations.

i've been piloting your hype train/plane/boat/bus for a few months now, and my sole job has been to get you excited. but now we're getting serious. now i'm asking you to put your seatbelt on. now i want you to start mentally preparing yourself for this shit.

beta testing means that the game is effectively in its final state. there won't be any dramatic changes between now and community release. the next month or two will be dedicated to smoothing out everything we've worked on up to this point. and holy shit have we worked on a lot of stuff.

so. how much game is e19?

play time is going to vary heavily between people, but right now we're putting an estimate of 100-130 hours from start to finish.
that is insane. that is five real-life days of straight gameplay- and you still might not make it through to the end. we're starting beta testing and are expecting maybe a couple of people to actually complete the game before release.

if you're wondering why testing has taken so long, this is why.

what's the game going to be like compared to e18?

last post i did a non-exhaustive round-up of all the new features that we've made to the mechanics of the game between e18 and e19. performance wise, the game runs like a dream. i personally can't go back to the original e18 release. it's a horrible, laggy nightmare. i sincerely hope that our release pushes the wider fangame community one step closer to abandoning the base rmxp engine.

it's not quite such a leap forward in performance compared to e18.3, but it's still considerably smoother than that release, which itself was already a huge step up from e18.

    runnin smooth like butta

what's the gameplay going to be like compared to e18?

this is actually a difficult question.

see, when we first started making postgame, we were hoping to make a reasonably fulfilling epilogue to the main game with some legendary quests that weren't just shoehorned in.

that is not what happened. we accidentally made a whole additional game.

we've taken to referring the split as e19m and e19p- "m" for main, and "p" for post.

    let's talk about e19m first.

e19m is your standard pokemon league fare. i've made this comparison before, but the difference between e18 and e19m is like the difference between persona 5 and persona 5 royal. the pre-19 content is everything you already love, but better. e19m is the new shit you've been waiting for since dinosaurs roamed the earth. it's just more of the content you already love. i don't need to sell you on it.

my only caution in advance is that the experience has varied a lot between people. one person's favorite part has been someone else's least favorite part. from my perspective, that's fine! everyone has different tastes and it's only natural that the various story beats will hit people differently from each other. the reason i mention this in advance is because the last thing that i want happening to anyone playing this game is that they are so hyped that a speed bump in the narrative ruins the experience. i am hoping that some advance perspective is enough to prevent this. someone has really liked every part of e19.

    pre-19 has been universally praised.

the changes certainly do not amount to an overhaul, but the revamped areas and story adjustments do wonders to the overall quality of the game. my first playthrough of reborn was back when e15 came out, like, six years ago. i remember how drawn into the game i was back then. pre-19 was a lighting reminder of everything i originally loved about the game on my first playthrough. ace has also been incredibly well received. i look forward to seeing them on the top of all your tier lists.

in the past, i've suggested replaying the game. at this point, i'd strongly recommend doing so. you'll miss out on some great content if you don't.

    now let's talk about e19p.

e19p is very different from the rest of the game. a number of testers have commented that it feels like an entirely different game.

and... yeah. i think we accidentally made the sequel to reborn already.

e19p is structured around quests. they're basically just mini-episodic segments pertaining to a specific legendary.

it's also kind of a miracle that they exist! back when we started working on postgame, the idea of making a quest for every legendary made ame seize up with anxiety. we got past that by deciding we wouldn't make any legendary quests that we had zero interest in. there's also a handful of quests made and written by other dev team members. as a result, you get a huge variety of content at the expense of consistency.

(it might be a surprise to hear that the quests were causing a lot of anxiety considering the sheer length of postgame. that's fair! turns out the bigger problem was just the anxiety anyway.)

there's also an overarching plot that crosses between the individual quests. it is branch dependent. some of you are probably freaking out at the mention of branches. the breakdown of them is simple. there are two branches. one is not better than the other.

you're probably not going to believe me when i say that one's not better. i suspect that there will be a lot of opinions about which one is better than the other- there already have been some splits on this over the course of testing (and, for that matter, development). i just really want to stress that, from a development perspective, one branch is not better than the other.

e19p is also very battle heavy. the episodic segments are capped off by miniboss fights, with some character bosses sprinkled in as well. minor trainers practically don't exist. they have been fired.

it is, overall, a massive change in pace compared to the main game. treat it like an accidental sequel.

now i don't want to talk about this, but...

"hey cass! when's e20 coming ou-"

    no.

    no no no no no.

    no.

    no.

    ok?

    ame wants out.

"hey cass! will there be any future updates?"

maybe! i'll still be working on deso/rejuv, and i've set up the scripts so that the three major games all run on the same scriptbase. this basically means that i can work on other games and occasionally update reborn along with them. there might also be some minor content updates, but this is a big, big maybe. i can't predict what will happen after we finish; i can only tell you what people are thinking about doing. who knows how it'll all actually work out.

    final thoughts.

the game is going to be done. finished. over. complete.

it's been 10 years since development first began. a little more than three years since the last major release.

even beyond the hype of a long-awaited game being released, this is also going to be a big community event.

there are people who have been in the community the entire time the game's been worked on. there are people who just found this game last week! there's all kinds of people in between. there are people playing this game who were 5 years old when ame started working on it.

what i'm saying is that this place will be drowning in feels. big waves of "wow holy shit this game is finished." people gushing about how much they like it. (hopefully!) be ready for that too.

as much as i'd love to release tomorrow, we still have to finish testing :(

we're all super hype for you to play it and see everything we've done.

there will still be a few more hype trains before community release, where I'll probably field questions and tell y'all how to prep.

This hype train has just crashed through my bedroom wall, ran straight through to the other end of my apartment and left nothing but a deep trench carved out by its progression, and you know what? I am LIVING for it! It almost feels like a dream that things are this close to completion, and quite frankly it's a dream I don't want to wake up from

I don't post a lot but I have to say that this journey with Reborn has been amazing, from finding and playing it 5-6 years ago, through each episode after, and even now waiting for the finale. I can't wait for the final chapter of this amazing story.

The end is nigh!!! The thing we have all been desperately waiting for. We got out asses kicked in the prev 18 episodes but let us get ready to get our asses kicked one final time as we approach the pinnacle.

Hopefully Glass gauntlet will be dethroned as the hardest fight.

    HYPE indeed!!!

To Ame and all the devs, congrats for making it. You have reached the finished line. Congrats and big hugs. The journey has been real and we go for one last ride.

This post bring a tear to muh eye T_T

It's been 3000 years... that's how long ago I played this game for the first time. I think it was episode 7,  "sisters keeper" or something. I was like 10. Now I'm 22.

    You guys rock.

    1. Are there going to be exclusive legendaries for each branch?

(meaning we'd get the others by a second gamerun or trade)?

Or are they all available regardless, and it's just sequence/storyline differences?

    2. Will we get to know the branching split point beforehand? Is the Reshiram - Zekrom split related?

"Final episode" is really something tbh. Some of us have been around with that game for years. (episode 9 🥲)

Waiting for that ep16 release 🥲

Waiting for that ep19 release 🥲🥲🥲

Thank you and all the developers for the great finale prepared

...So this is it. We're actually in endgame now. The hype is so real its making it hard to breathe.

I've never felt obligated to complete a dex in a Pokémon game, but I think this will be a special occasion.

Starting fresh from square one and won't put the game down till every page is filled.

I say this with the power of Arceus the almighty...let's...fucking...GOOOOOO!!

I really wanted to make (or repeat? hype is doing something to my memory) the joke about special relativity and time dilation. Something about “beta has started, therefore you’re literally reaching near light-speed, thus it’ll take much longer until the release than for us than for you”.

Then I remembered that the relativistic factor was gamma. But there’s no gamma, there’s only community, so there shouldn’t be any time dilation. Which is a lot better!

I’m the only one to find this funny, I suppose?

Anyway, I wanted to repeat how impressed and thankful I am with what you (and Ame, Marcello, and the others) have told us of the entire team’s work. And I’m looking forward to seeing the end result (hopefully I won’t get thoroughly pwned and stuck at some point).

(and Ame has deserved a rest for all of her labors. Sailing West, I have read, is the traditional reward.)

Honestly… I'm glad that you all have come to terms this is the end.  Because as much I love this game I was kinda worried the team was going to overwork themselves with another episode being related to the new generations...
Or the new mechanics and would lead to the staff/mod/developing team overworking themselves to dangerous levels…

    But honestly
I'm glad you all came to this decision, i fully support this being the final episode(version) and I'm curious of what you guys hold for the future. As long, you all(the mod team) enjoy it and find the right community for said project I'm sure it will turn out great.

Thank you for these 10 years of hard work and creativity. I can't wait to see the final product.

So this is it... the moment I, and so many other people, have waited years for, is finally close at hand. It's finally time for the finale. Ame, Cass, all the rest of the devs, your game has truly amazed me. Reborn is one of the games which best helped me better understand and experiment with competitive strategies. And your work also inspired me to learn game making to try my own hand at a fangame, at some point in the future. Thank you for everything. Sorry if that came off as weird or anything, just wanted to say it 😅

Oh, this is great news! I played the game for the first time back in November of 2021, and while I don't wanna replay it all from the beginning (Seriously, getting my teeth kicked in once was probably enough for me, I only had the one pair,) I'm really excited to just see how it's all wrapped up in the end! ^-^

...Also, I wanna forcibly bury Fern's head in the dirt like an ostrich, please tell me I get to do that specifically.

    Alright, I'm so hyped!

Reborn was the first fangame I played and it changed the whole Pokemon franchise for me forever. I've played it since like ep15 which was like 6 or 7 year ago? I forgot, but damn I'll be stoked when I can sink my teeth into the beautifully grim and challenging world of Reborn again.

Also, much obliged for the Controller support. You're all awesome

If it's this one, i hope they added a way to trade pokemons from a save to another (for example using something similiar to the  "SWM_SharedPC", if not this latter directly)

But actually i want this function in game independently, because i want to start a new save and i don't want to neither to redo the various pokemon events (example: starters) nor to refarm the IVs.

Oh boy the hype is real!!! Congrats on sticking with this project for 10 years. I only started playing last summer but this game completely sucked me in. I work at a start-up and I still managed to make time between 60-80 hour weeks because this game was what I always dreamed a Pokémon game could be. Adding Rejuvenation and Desolation, it’s a dream come true. Thanks so much for the hard work to Cass, Ame, and the rest of team, I can’t wait to play it once it drops!

I just need one answer, and I'll be ready to wait until the release.

Is Shelly still an adorable smol bean that deserves everything?

(Jokes aside, I'm excited as all hell. Been a while since I played some challenging pokemon, and I was starting to hunger for some pokemon story)

It's crazy how I started this game all the way back when I was in middle school, and I'm still here, excited as all hell for the final release at the end of my first year of college. Thank You to the whole reborn team for seeing this story through to the end, as Reborn was such a huge part of why my love for Pokemon has remained strong through all these years. Can't wait to finish on my old save, and then replay for completion on a completely new one!

I remember being barely 12 years old when I first came across Pokemon Reborn and now I'm already halfway through my first year of university. The final game looked so far away at that time, yet now it feels as if barely a few days have passed. I can't express how much I appreciate all the work everyone put in to the development of this incredible game, which will surely be one of my favorites for many years to come. You're all amazing <3

I cannot wait for e19, been following the game for around since e18 first came out, loved this game so much. It's funny that I only have 1 "complete" save file, Every other save file i have done was either dropped out of boredom or I just somehow forgot about it. All those moments happened around the Agate split. That part just really makes me feel something LOL, I do love this game very much. Thank you Ame and the devs

Now I'm pretty new here and I recently only just started playing, I originally played Uranium and then found this, and oh on god this game is daym good.

I'm at uhh The level 65 badge (I don't know the name lmao please forgive me) and I'm a Samurott Enjoyer, I wish It had a mega but alas Samurott never won't probably get one (despite being in legends Arceus some reason) I'm not one for using the meta in games, more or less the opposite some reason.

I'm very impressed by how much dedication and content this game has for a Pokémon "fangame" (basically a better Pokémon game at this point, fuck Nintendo), I enjoy the difficulty of the game, the setting/theme of the game, pretty much everything, and god daym this music goes hard.

I'm on the assumption this Episode 19 thing is a meme due to it being a long while from the previous update? I'm just glad people are still working on a 10 year old game at this point, absolutely astounding.

I salute you all, for working on this game, from start to finish, everyone involved.

If there's anything I should know or be told, please go ahead, I always appreciate it. (aside from telling me not to use samurott)

I hope you all have a good day too :)

Please give Samurott a mega :)

    THIS. IS. IT.

PS: CHO CHO MOTHERFU****S!!!!!!!!! THERES NO BRAKE ANYMORE AND WE'LL STOP ONLY TO CRASH AND BURN!!!!!!!!!!!

a while ago y’all said that ultra beast don’t get rights in terms of quests. Will ultra beasts have rights of being obtainable at all?

I think they meant that Ultra Beasts aren't Legendaries, and that they won't have a dedicated quest with a story.

They will probably be connected to the Solgaleo and Lunala quest, and we will catch them going in their own Ultra Space via Ultra Whormhole, or encountering them in Reborn region cause a time-space distortion.

I remember ame saying somewhere that UBs would be available as wild mons in the new areas

First of all, hi. It's been a while since I've posted.

I started my journey around Episode 8, found the game on occasional visits to forums on fanmade games and such. I expected it to be addicting by concept, but damn. The Dev team sucked me in.

Can't say how much I've enjoyed playing this game (and messing with some stats/values, because a lot of mons deserve more love). The theme fit just right, the darker colour palette, the harder difficulty. I trust and believe a lot of people see this - and all games that it inspired - as amazing work through and through.

My excited theorycrafting kid side feels kinda sad that things like future game mechanics most likely will never arrive past this episode (but one can secretly hope). At the same time, as a player, I couldn't be more proud of communities like this one. The level of effort and support given to that effort is nothing short of amazing.

Thank you, from the bottom of my anxiety ridden heart, soon I'll have something to make addulting a little easier ^^ some things are definitely worth waiting for, no matter how long.

    Cheers !

PS: 10 years already dear lord why do I feel so old

PPS: Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but, out of pure non-demanding curiosity, would it be possible to gain access to the PBS files like older episodes ?

probably! i'm a hop, skip, and a jump away from eradicating the compiler entirely, but unfortunately i don't think that'll be ready in time for release.

Right now I am about 25/30% through the main game when the full release comes out should I stop playing and wait for the full release and start over and make a new game to get the full experience of the game or should I just continue from where I am? If I do continue from where I am to keep all my shinnies and grinding what will I be missing out on? I love this game so much I am extremely impressed by your dedication and passion for this game You are doing a great job!

my recommendation would still be to start from the beginning, especially if you're not that far in yet.
