  • Testing the waters: a FAQ about V13's testing phase

    Zumi

So I don't think I'm gonna need to point out that little testing bar in the progression tracker on the right... But in case you missed, there sure is a testing bar in the progression tracker on the right! Meaning that V13 is officially out of the internal testing stage and has reached the next stage of testing. Hurray! Progress is being made and release is creeping closer!

But, it's still going to take a little time. Now, as I've noticed in both the dev blog comments & the V13 discussion thread, there are a lot of questions about testing, so I'm compiling the most frequently asked questions in this post so you have all the answers you'll (probably) be needing in one place, and won't have 230498203498 people asking the same question over and over again, yaaaaaaaaaaay

    *cough*

    anyways.

"Ssssssso what does testing of the game really mean?"

The word really should speak for itself already, but testing of the game is catching any game breaking bugs, such as moves and items not working properly, tile & passability errors, AI errors, sound errors etc. All kinds of errors and bugs that really shouldn't be there, and therefore should be fixed before the release of the game. We don't want to release a game publicly that barely functions and keeps breaking at every turn because that's really not the kind of experience we want to give you, which is why this stage is necessary before we can bring out the update publicly. Yes, I know that some people have been saying like "ohhh i don't mind, i'll just avoid the bug and note what not to do!" but I'll be 100% honest here -- the second people start running into problems and can't fix it on their own we're going to get swarmed with complaints and the same bug reports over and over, and for the sanity of all of the people on the dev team, we're not going to do that.

"How many stages of testing are there?"

In total, three - Internal, Alpha and Beta. We've moved from internal to alpha a little less than two weeks ago, which is a testing phase held with a closed, small group of people trusted by the dev team who go through the new content to sift out the biggest, baddest bugs. After we've progressed far enough into testing in the alpha phase, we'll be moving to the beta phase, which is held with a larger group of people. At this stage we should be at a point where people will start finding smaller problems that might've gone unnoticed during alpha due to a smaller number of people testing things back then, but all the big issues should hopefully be taken care of!

There was a little confusion about the naming of these testing stages this week, due to what we currently call alpha having been referred to as a second round of internal testing in the past, and people thought another round of testing has been shoved in between. However, all that's changed is the naming of these testing phases -- the actual structure of testing remains similar to previous dev cycles and fundamentally hasn't changed.

"But, but but but- if testing has been going on for almost two weeks, why is the progress bar still at 0%?!"

No need to worry -- the bar just doesn't get updated often. We've made progress! Just don't expect that bar to be an accurate representation of our progress at any point in time, lmao

"How long does testing usually take?"

I really cannot give you a time estimate for this, because it entirely depends on the amount of content an update brings with it. V13 is -- like stated in previous posts -- a massive content update, both in terms of new content and older content that has been revised. There's a lot of ground to cover for the testers and it simply will take some time for most people to get through everything, both during alpha and beta testing. There's no saying how long testing will take in total, but hopefully stuff will go smoother once all the worst bugs have been taken care of.

if you want to know how bad it has gotten at times, ask azery. he's had a minor meltdown at least three times at this point i think. please send him your strength and energy

"So when does V13 come out then?"

Again, no release date because we don't know when we're done with testing, but...

    I'm sure you'll notice when we're getting close. :)

Hold onto your horses a little longer, yall o7

Since v13 is two part when it comes to development with the extra content Jan already told us about, in a sense we're gonna be testing the game when the community releases come out too. Zumi and Jan have been saying this for a year, v13 is the biggest update ever, people gotta have patience and I would say be aware of existing bugs when we finally get the chance to play, but just let them work and do what they gotta do.

Love ya jan, zumi and all the devs for this beauty. Good luck with those meltdowns azery. Hope you don't experience more of them. I had prepared myself for a late release and I'm happy for it. I know you guys will make it much better than what it is now when you bring it to us. Hope y'all are keeping safe in this pandemic.

My excitement level is over 9000!! But of course I'll happily wait patiently for the next episode- to be continued next time on Dragonball Rejuvenation! Seriously though, take your time, and thanks for all your hard work!

Thank you for the explanations! Testing is indeed very, very important and it being skipped would certainly damage the release in ways that could only be called original (or so I assume -- but I could very possibly be wrong).

So if there is any energy, cheer or motivation that I can share, I'll be glad to. Testers, keep up with the good work! And remember (if it helps) that every time anything goes wrong, this means that you're improving the game.

Perfect timing! I just finished V12, so this wait will not be anywhere nearly as painful as some of Reborn's, but I just want to say to all of the devs and testers that you guys are truly the best. I mean, the developers more so, but all of you that are sticking it out under the constant barrage of "when release:" posts, my heart goes out to you. I can't imagine the kind of pressure that comes from having such an anticipated project so close to release, but honestly, take as long as you need. Nobody is going anywhere, you've made too good a game for that to happen!

I send you all the love I can muster in the form of virtual hugs! Testing is such a pain, but it's so crucial and actually kinda fun. Good luck, we can't wait for the rollout!

If anyone needs some encouragement or a shoulder to virtually cry on, I'm happy to talk on the Discord!

Take all the time y'all need! This has been (and forever will be) my favorite game, and I don't just mean that in the fangame sense. Seriously, nothing has hooked me so much as Rejuv, I can't imagine how much heart and soul goes into such an amazing plot & game in general. Seriously hyped for V13, but I am more than willing to wait for it!! Sending all my positive energy towards the dev team!!! <3

Having done some Alpha Phase testing for another game, I think I can confidently say that there's quite a few really nasty bugs that definitely we're not gonna see unless someone on the Dev. Team decides to share them after the fact, ala Reborn's "Memetree" incident. If anything, I suspect that there a lot more opportunities for stuff to break down here considering how mechanically ambitious V12 already was! So yeah, giving the crew some extra time to sort things out sounds absolutely like a fine idea to me. May your enemies actually die when they reach 0 HP!

Testing is usually the hardest work, especially when you test games, usually has shit ton of events,  and countless more combinations of those said events. but i'm curious how you guys test this though. Did you guys just play through the game and check everything manually or have some software to test the events automatically?

All the testing is done manually by simply playing through the game, and we'll know when we run into an error bc either an actual error pops up, the game crashes, you get stuck or you just kinda... walk into something that you can just kinda tell isn't right. The testers share screenshots and reports collected in a handful of channels, after which someone (usually Azery or Cass at this point) shares a hotfix download with the files in it that need to be replaced in order for the fix to take effect.

It's not the most efficient method to collect all the reports though, so for V13's public release we plan to have a bug tracking system in place (put together by yours truly after wrestling with google sheets for 23489273 hours) that makes it easier for us to track the tons of reports we'll likely be getting. It automatically sorts them into different categories/sheets, and we'll be making the sheet with all the bugs reported publicly visible so people can immediately see what's been reported, being worked on, fixed for a later patch or fixed in the current build. As for the hotfixes, like with previous releases we'll be releasing one or two patches for the base game of V13 to fix a bunch of problems at once people will inevitably run into that hadn't been caught during testing.

Wow so you guys just brute force it, mad respect for the patience, can't imagine how many mental breakdown that the patchers must have suffered lol, great idea on the documentation though, the hardest part of whole testing thing is to document the whole thing into a neat human readable from pile of hot garbage, especially when you don't have any tools to help you. not the most efficient way but i guess with enough tester it will cover a lot of ground.  Keep up the good work guys can't help much but i'm gonna give you my energy

Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if this one got locked too, it's not like there's much to talk about, but the devs are too nice to not listen to our mindless ramblings while we wait, it seems :P

the testing phase is still 0%

     when will this increase.

    😢😢😢

Soon. TM, considering the amount of bugs it took the devs to find and fix, it may take about more or less the same time for Alpha testers to report bugs and have the devs report in as the bugs can be big or small, so it could take longer since everyone's PC (maybe) works differently.

how long do you think it would take for people to start asking for v14 progress after v13 gets released?

    i give it a week

except they won't even get v14 after v13 so asking will be in vain anyways. 13.5 comes first

SO is V13 part 1 going to have a cliffhanger ending like an abrupt "to be continued" sort of thing, or will the action take a breather and the next part will smoothly continue the events?

V13.5 (or V13 part 2 I guess) is mostly going to focus on sidequests and events, since the devs planned a bunch of them out, all of the main story content for V13 as a whole will be in the first part. I'm assuming that's what you meant, and not "will the ending of V13 be a cliffhanger?", as I don't think the devs plan to spoil the ending of the next segment of their game.

No hard feelings. The thing that I was thinking is about patches before V13.5 (like V13.1, V13.2, V13.3 and V13.4). However, it may be impossible for patches to be available, now that the testing phase is here.

Beta won't take that long I think we can expect a community release in a few weeks

I mean the release depends entierly on how beta testing goes. It's easy to say the first phase took around 25 days so closed beta will take that long, and I certinally hope that is the case. It's just good to remember that unexpected stuff can come up.

Alpha is the first run so any gamebreaking bugs and glaring issues usually show up during that, unless the team deals with major issues the beta testing shouldn't be that long, but either way we're at the home stretch now

It really depends on how they coded it. Worst case sinario it rolls around to 0 or a negative number. You should be fine.

There is going to be a limit, as it variables only get assigned so many bites, but it is going to be really hard to hit that limit.

  • V14 is still very much in active development! We just can't show anything that's not OOC nonsense from the devs because it's all spoilers. Sorry!

As of 26/10/2024... Paragon Part 1 of V14 is complete, and Part 2 and 3 are being worked on! Renegade has not been touched yet. Please bear with us 🙏

Enjoy some more nonsense in the meantime!
